Is Jesus Your Everything?

In between the massive amounts of hours I’ve devoted to writing Impact My Life: Biblical Mentoring Simplified (which is now available in print and Kindle from Amazon plus on iTunes), I’ve been reading through another recently finished work by author Mary DeMuth, Everything: What You Give and What You Gain to Become Like Jesus.

It is a stunning read.

Her words have implications.

You can’t absorb it and be left unchanged.

Nor can you pretend that Jesus is your everything any longer.

Either He is or He isn’t.

Many of us say that Jesus is our everything, but we don’t necessarily live like that is true. We say that God is number one, followed by family, then friends, and work or school or sports, but our time reflects an all together different set of priorities. In a 24 hour day, we make time for sleep (barely) and TV, Facebook and blogging, a tweet and a text, shopping and gossiping, but oh, the drama we display at the suggestion that we ought to devote time to reading our Bibles and sitting quietly in prayer.

I’m not pointing a finger at you, friend.

My Bible study homework has been sitting in the same place since yesterday, waiting for my attention. For me, it isn’t whether I’ll get it done, but rather with what heart will I do it?  Will I check it off my list, so I can give lip to the fact that I spent time in the Word?  Or will I actually devote my best hours to the study of the Scriptures, so that I can meet with my Lord and get to know the Jesus I say is my everything a whole lot better?

I want Jesus to be my everything. And maybe you do, too.

The problem doesn’t lie in our core values. We really do want Jesus to be our everything! The problem is rooted in how we live, which traces back to what we truly think about God and our place in this world of His. If Jesus is going to be our everything, we’ve got to start with lining up our priorities to reflect that belief. We’ve got to identify what is standing in our way, fess it up to the Lord, and make a radical course correction.  It is a journey, one that Mary paves with tender words of mercy, humble confessions, and timely rebukes.

“I didn’t write this book as a condemnation or sermon…I pen these words as a fellow struggeler, as one who doesn’t often feel Jesusy or strong or faith-filled. In this spiritual journey, I’ve come to see the importance of everything that’s inside of us, how we think, what our hearts tell us. If we are near to Jesus’ mind and heartbeat, we’ll naturally act like Him.
• What we think about God matters.
• How we allow Him to reign in our hearts matters.
• How we obey Him in the moment matters.
This book follows those three truths. We start with our heads, what we think about God. We’ll move to our hearts, the place Jesus wants to revolutionize, to become our everything. And we’ll end with our hands, how we live out Jesus’ internal transformation.” ~ Mary DeMuth, Everything

Mary’s words paint a picture of faith on the landscape of reality. She shares her heart, her life, her weaknesses within the pages of Everything, while carefully demonstrating that what think, feel, and do really adds up to Jesus becoming our everything. Yes, Jesus became my everything nearly 20 years ago.
I’ve given up many things to call Christ my Lord, but the giving up isn’t done. There is still so much more for me to learn and ways to grow in my faith. Everything is a tool to move me in that direction. Will you consider making a tool to help you mature in your faith, too?

Yes, I’ve gained even more to have Him as my Savior and Redeemer, and that blessing never ends.

In light of celebrating my birthday today, I couldn’t be more humbled by this gift of salvation and the work of the Lord in my life. The Lord put His hand on me long before I ever acknowledged His existence. He redeemed me from the pit, set me on solid ground, washed away my sins, bathed me in His grace and forgiveness. He gave me a new name, a new calling, a new purpose — all of which I’m still discovering. He transformed my life, for His glory. It is a marvelous story, still being written by His Holy pen. He is an amazing author, who is busy at work writing your story, too.

Jesus has transformed my life, from the inside out and outside in, so shouldn’t He be my everything?

Shouldn’t Jesus be your everything, too?
