Pop-Up Ads

A few years ago, it seemed as if pop-up ads appeared overnight on every website I visited.  I would open my browser and the screen would get overrun with ads for insert-product-of-your-choice. When visiting certain sites, I could almost guarantee a Netflix or screen saver ad would come up. Thankfully, my husband knows a thing or two about computers, and he was able to adjust my internet settings to block those annoying ads. On occasion, one or two still gets through the filter, but they are nowhere near as common as before.

Pop-up-Ads

Recently I was thinking about the similarities between those annoying pop-ups and the tactics of Satan.  Some days are better than others, but I can almost guarantee the enemy will interrupt my day, much like a pop-up ad interrupts a browsing session, and pop in with a negative message. Much like the computer marketing geniuses have found a way to ensure we see ads that may appeal to us, so also Satan knows just where to strike.

Here are a few pop-up ads he likes to use on me:

You have no business mentoring other moms.

You’re not good enough to be used by God.

You don’t even know how to follow your own advice

Look at your own children, they’re far from perfect!

You can’t…..you’re not…you never…..

Moms, make no mistake. We’re not the only ones.

If the enemy slithers in and whispers these lies to moms like you and me, you can bet he’s doing the same to my daughter, and to yours.

When I was a girl, and long before I had a relationship with Jesus, these pop-ads played through my head constantly. And I believed them.  Each and every one.

You’re not pretty enough.

You’re not thin enough.

You don’t wear the right clothes.

You don’t have any friends.

No one likes you.

How can we equip our daughters to handle these attacks?

Of course, we need to be honest and open, making sure they know they are not alone in this struggle. Perhaps the best way to do this is by teaching them the power behind God’s Word. Here are some of many Scriptures we can all fall back on when Satan pops in:

“…Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” James 4:7, NKJV

“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”  2 Corinthians 10:2-5, NKJV

“Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” Luke 10:19, NKJV

I want to encourage you to spend time in God’s Word every day and to share His Word with your daughter. Life is busier than ever, but making the time for God is critical. By being in His presence and soaking in His Word, we will be victorious in handling those pop-up ads.
