What has impacted my parenting the most?

for_moms_buttonDid you know that long before I was a mom, I served as a dorm mom at a Christian boarding and day school?

Oh yes. I was a twenty-something serving as a dorm mom for boys and later on, as I crossed the threshold into my thirties, I became a mama to teen girls.  It was an amazing experience for me, revealing to me all that I had to look forward to as my future little ones would pass through their toddler years on their way to becoming teenagers.

To be honest, I was really more excited about becoming a mom of a teens than caring for little babes. I love teens. I love being able to talk with them and hear their stories. I love being able to mentor them as a way to impact their lives and shape their futures. I think because it feels like through my relationship with teens, my life as a teen is redeemed.

What I learned becomes useful information to a young person in need.

What I wish I had in my life, I now can become to someone else.

But in the process of raising my own children, I’ve learned a few other really important lessons. Having a heart for the task of motherhood is simply not enough. It needs to be guided by truth and under-girded by a personal, growing relationship with Jesus Christ in order to offer the impact we desire to have on our children. What do I mean by this?  Well, join me over at The Better Mom, where I am sharing Part 1 of a two part series on the topic of, “3 Principles that Have Impacted My Parenting.”
