Be Still.

Why You Need to Be a Quitter

“What’s going on, Jen?” I asked my fourteen-year-old-friend. She had sent me a stress text a few days earlier because she felt desperate to escape the pressure of her life. “I dunno. I’m just stressed. I’ve just been so busy, and I feel like I can’t handle it anymore.” Jen is a smart, talented, bubbly freshman. She has a lot of things going for her, but life had reached a boiling point a few weeks earlier. What’s weird is that Jen’s family was not in crisis. She wasn’t in a bad relationship with a boy. Her friends weren’t talking behind…

When You Feel Left Out with Your Friends

Recently a young reader asked this question: What do you do if you always feel out-of-place when you’re with your friends and whatever you do, you still feel left out? I think every young woman experiences feeling left out from time to time, and to be honest, I think adult women sometimes feel the same way. Just recently, a friend of mine planned a birthday party for another friend. I wasn’t invited. I’m not as close a friend with the person whose birthday it was, but I felt like I was close enough to be invited to her party. After all,…

What are your expectations?

How About Exchanging Your Expectations?

Have you ever stopped to consider your expectations, especially considering your future relationships? Do you believe that “one day” you’ll be able to have a better marriage than your parents?  Are you hoping that if you find the perfect guy, you’ll experience that love and joy and happiness you’ve always hoped for? Well, you’re not alone. I felt that way when was I teen and 20s0mething, but I’ve since learned that my expectations weren’t the least bit helpful. Instead, they set me up for disappointment, until I learned how to take those expectations and replace them with relevant truth —…

It’s Time to Let God Be God

I’m a like-to-know-what-to plan kind of a gal. Have you noticed God often doesn’t cooperate with our preference for making plans? Currently, I am asking God, “What next?” Thirsting for control, I’d like a printed itinerary of what God has in store for my family. Searching for solutions, I wrestle with problems that seem to have no answers. Maybe you have a few of those too. God’s answer to “What next?” is simple: “Trust Me.” In this place of uncertainty, I have been reading Isaiah 43:1 NIV.      Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by…

Summer days at home . . .

The Un-Scheduled Summer

This has been the most unusual summer for us, marked by sweetly un-rushed late night family times and lazy late-rising mornings. That’s because it’s the first summer in which no-one is heading out the door to camp or hurrying off to youth events at church. I know, how un-America. How un-scheduled! How un-expected! And how absolutely wonderful! I’m not sure we’ll ever go back to our old habit of planning out summer days and filling them up with activities. There’s nothing like hours spent reading, playing board games, getting in some modern-day screen time, or watching a movie on a…
