What You Need to Know to Host a Girls Event

Recently I shared with More to Be readers about a dream I had of hosting a reDefining Beauty event for teen girls. This event was something that God laid on my heart over a year ago as something my Acteens group could do for girls in our  community.

For some time I had wrestled with the idea. Could we pull it off?

What if no one showed up?

What if no one had fun or learned about the Lord?

For months I kept it to myself and tried to come up with excuses and reasons why we couldn’t do it. Until my Acteens girls approached me about it. They were so excited about this idea and hearing them talk about it showed me that it was something God wanted us to do.

He had spoken to me and now He was speaking to them. It was time to plan it.

Would you like to host an event for girls?

If you’re thinking of planning an event…

We want to come alongside you and hep you see how planning an event for girls doesn’t need to be overwhelming or intimidate. We’re already praying for you and asking God to meet you right where you are!

Step 1:  Seek the Lord in Prayer

As you begin the process of thinking about planning an event, especially one like reDefining Beauty, start with prayer.  As you approach the Lord with the desires of your heart, be specific with Him about your needs and concerns, too.

Step 2:  Consider the Details

As you focus on the details of planning your event, use these questions to focus on your needs and who you need to be a part of your team.

  1. Should it be a day or night event?
  2. Should we include a meal or just refreshments?
  3. Will we target a certain age group?
  4. Will we invite a guest speaker or will someone from our church bring the message?
  5. Should we play music?  If so, what kind?
  6. How much will our budget be for the event?

Step 3:  Form a Team

As you pray about your event and consider the details of what you’d like to see happen, consider forming a team of women who can help you pull it off.  They can be a part of the process when it comes to making  decisions about music, decorations, and additional volunteers for the event. They’ll also help you stay grounded and focused on the heart of the matter.

To be honest, I got caught up a lot on the little details of hosting. It’s the planner in me. I thought I needed to have everything perfect and put together. The week leading up to the event I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off!  Finally my friend and co-leader Jenna stopped me one evening, put her hands on my shoulders and said these words to me,

[Tweet “You cannot mess up what God already has planned.”]

It was just what I needed to hear and exactly what the Lord had been trying to tell me all week — and that’s why it’s good to host an event like this with partners!  Hosting an event is not about the decorations. It’s not even about the food or how many show up to your event. It’s about letting the word of God come alive and reaching new hearts for the Kingdom of God. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the planning details. But don’t let the details take away from the message you’re trying to bring.

Step 4:  Select a Speaker

Once you know the direction you’re heading in, it’s time to talk about a speaker for the event. I strongly urge you to look for speakers who are experienced and whose niche us the area you want to focus on.  This may be someone you already know in your church, or it may be an outside speaker.

What we did and what I learned . . .

We called our event Girls Night Out: Finding Worth in the Mirror & the Word because we wanted to have a real discussion of our worth in Christ’s eyes.

That night it wasn’t about what the world said was beautiful — it was about the beauty of our relationship with Christ and who we become through Him.

Several of the women in our church offered to cook for the event which saved us not only money, but was a great collaboration among the women in our church.  We also decided that we would focus on the age group of our Acteens group, girls in 6th-12th grade. Mothers and group leaders were also welcome to attend with their teens. Our guest speaker was Nicki Koziarz from Proverbs 31 Ministries, and she was absolutely wonderful!

I wish I could say that things that night went off without a hitch and that everything went exactly as it was planned. That didn’t happen. But what I can tell you is that God was in the house.  You could feel the presence of the Lord just moving through each of us in the sanctuary that night. It was a feeling I truly can’t express to you in words.  God was changing our hearts and it didn’t matter if some of the balloons had already accidentally popped.

Girls were discovering their true worth through Christ!

We had over 60 in attendance that night and 10 came to know the Lord! This blessed my heart more than I could ever have imagined! As we cleaned up that night, our group was on a complete high from what we just experienced.  We have already started talking about next year’s event!

I’m not going to lie, hosting an event like this is hard work. It takes time and LOTS of prayer. It takes a team of people to help plan and put on the event. But the Lord will show up!

One last thing I learned throughout this process…be prepared for what the Lord will do in you while you’re hosting. God has since placed a new dream in my heart. I’m in heavy prayer over what I think He is leading me to do next.  Could we turn this into a conference one day?

No more doubts here. With God, anything is possible!

We’re here to help you . . .

Maybe you’re thinking of hosting an event on smaller scale in your home. Or maybe you’re currently planning a big event and need help in knowing you’re not alone in the planning stages.

Hey! I am going into the tenth grade & have been thinking about hosting a bible study for upcoming ninth grade girls before school starts. As the enter highschool, they are introduced to many new things. I have learned so much from mine & my friends mistakes this past year that the only thing I want to do is help my upcoming babies not make the same ones. Also, last year, i had alot of questions about highschool that i didnt know who to ask.. & i just want these girls to feel welcome to ask me & them to know someone is there for them. I am asking for prayers as i begin planning the bible studys. Also, I would be overjoyed if you want to share any tips or advice for me as i lead these girls in there walk with christ!

    1. Hi Hannah,

What a wonderful idea and ministry that will be! I think it’s wonderful you want to help other young girls starting high school. I wish I would have had something like that when I was coming through high school! I would say first and foremost that when leading girls in their walk with Christ, relationships are everything. If you give enough time and let the girls get to know you and your heart, they’ll start to open up more, allowing you to dig a little deeper with them. I will most definitely be praying for you! Also, check out some of our M2B resources. You may find those helpful as well.

If I can help you any further, please let know!

  3. Hi Amanda,

    Thank you for your post!

I had organised a Conference earlier this year for teenage girls aged 13-17yrs old with the vision that God wanted to lead His beloved Daughters out of the desert of uncertainty and into his Promiseland of Purpose, Joy, and Love. Though this event was such a success and such a God-lead event I have had trouble finding God’s Heart for the next Conference next year until now. God has affirmed me and has spoken to me through everything you have written.I thank you for your obedience in allowing God to use you in such an impacting way and I praise God for you and your ministry. I am 16 years old and blessed to know Christ as my Saviour, Father, and Friend however, I believe Satan has targeted today’s generation of young women and the way we see ourselves because of the anointing God has over us. Your part in bringing God’s beloved daughters to know where their worth lies and who they are in Christ will speak volumes in their lives and I’m super excited to see where God leads this ministry and the impact it will have in this world.

Praying God’s abundant blessings over you and this ministry and asking that you may keep Girls With Purpose(name of our ministry) in your prayers.

    Blessings,
    Natasha
