The Un-Scheduled Summer

This has been the most unusual summer for us, marked by sweetly un-rushed late night family times and lazy late-rising mornings. That’s because it’s the first summer in which no-one is heading out the door to camp or hurrying off to youth events at church. I know, how un-America. How un-scheduled! How un-expected! And how absolutely wonderful! I’m not sure we’ll ever go back to our old habit of planning out summer days and filling them up with activities.

There’s nothing like hours spent reading, playing board games, getting in some modern-day screen time, or watching a movie on a rainy summer afternoon. Sure, there’s moments of boredom and wonder about what to do next, but that doesn’t last long when there’s a floor to be vacuumed or laundry to put away. Suddenly, everyone has something important to do, and that moment of “I’m bored” becomes “Oh, I’m so totally fine right now.”

Summer days at home . . .

Maybe your summer is filled up, like the way ours used to be. Don’t be dismayed, friend. There’s still beauty and purpose in making plans and enrolling in camps, scheduling trips and pulling off grand activities.

Whether were living simply at home for a summer or planning our schedule full, our goal can be to move through these sacred days with grace in mind.

As a family, we can make the most of the time God has given us, even if it doesn’t go according to our plan. And together, we can praise God when we see Him doing something totally unexpected in our lives.

That’s what I’m sharing about at Mothers of Daughters, so come join me and be inspired by a dose of grace and truth.
