Is it time to tear down that wallpaper of lies?

I will take captive my thoughts and make them obedient to Christ.

2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

2 Corinthians 10:5 AMPC

[Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One),

2 Corinthians 10:5-6 MSG

The world is unprincipled. It’s dog-eat-dog out there! The world doesn’t fight fair. But we don’t live or fight our battles that way—never have and never will. The tools of our trade aren’t for marketing or manipulation, but they are for demolishing that entire massively corrupt culture. We use our powerful God-tools for smashing warped philosophies, tearing down barriers erected against the truth of God, fitting every loose thought and emotion and impulse into the structure of life shaped by Christ. Our tools are ready at hand for clearing the ground of every obstruction and building lives of obedience into maturity.

Lord God, it is so true that the battle for our lives begins in our minds. It’s in our thought life that we give way to our actions. Isn’t that why you urge us to do more than just take notice of our thoughts? You want us to take action and be cautious about what we choose to dwell upon in our minds, because that’s where actions begin to form.

Oh, Lord, this principle is so simple. So profound. So necessary. And yet, we ignore it all too often. We let our thoughts wander here and there, to and fro, without considering the consequence.

We expose our minds to input that is unholy and wholly destructive.  Maybe it doesn’t feel that way at first, but it always ends up there. We allow ourselves too much time to muse upon our feelings, instead of telling our feelings to fall in line with the Truth. We speak out loud words of falsehood, so often from a place of wounding, instead of soaking in your wisdom and proclaiming the hope of your healing.

Forgive us, God. Change us, God. Make our thought life obedient to Christ.

God, give us a holy boldness to do battle in our minds so that we may be wholly submitted to You.

Give us the courage to let go of the lies we’ve always believed and embrace the Truth you have given us in your Word.

God give us honest words filled with grace and truth, to speak over ourselves and to those you’ve placed in our lives.

In the Strong Name of Jesus, Amen.

I will take captive my thoughts and make them obedient to Christ.

For the last decade, I’ve been actively demolishing the lies sown into my heart and mind has been like removing wallpaper, ripping down one sheet at a time. Sometimes the process is long and tedious, only to expose another layer of lies, sown into my heart decades ago. Lies, like . . .

Lie: You’re so stupid. When God was handing out brains, you thought He said trains, and didn’t get on line.

Truth: You are fearfully and wonderfully made. Psalm 139

Lie: You’re so fat. If you keep feeding that gut of yours, you’ll never be able to lose the weight.

Truth: Your body is a temple of God. Everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial. 1 Corinthians 16:19-20, 1 Corinthians 10:23

Lie: You’ll never be happy, unless you make more money.

Truth: Joy comes from the Lord, not money. Philippians 4:4; Luke 12:34

Lie: You’ll never be able to get along with anyone.

Truth: It requires effort to live in peace with everyone. Romans 12:18

Lie: You can’t trust anyone – they will always cheat, leave, and reject you.

Truth: All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, but in Christ we find forgiveness, healing, and redemption. God is trustworthy. Romans 3:23; Matthew 6:14; Romans 4:7

These lies shaped my life, impacting my sense of worth and identity even after coming to know Christ as my Savior. That’s because a child’s worldview and belief system is shaped by the time they are six years old. If it is left unchallenged, it can stay with them for a lifetime.

By God’s grace, my belief system was challenged and continued to be pressed in upon with the Truth through the love of my husband, mentors, and dear friends. I wish it were a once-and-done process, but as I shared in Meet the New You when I describe the Trap & Transform process the book is built upon, trapping our thoughts and being transformed by God through renewing our minds with the truth is a daily process.

Trap & Transform Principle

I’m still learning how to “use our powerful God-tools for smashing warped philosophies, tearing down barriers erected against the truth of God, fitting every loose thought and emotion and impulse into the structure of life shaped by Christ.” The more I engage in this process, the more I see the fruit of winning the battle.

Is it time for you to engage in this battle for Truth . . . a battle for your mind, heart, soul, and Christ-centered identity?

Friend, isn’t it time for you to take your thoughts captive and be transformed by the truth?

I’d love to help you engage in this process. The Infuse Course (special price) is a great place to start, if you’re looking for something self-paced journey. Maybe you’re ready for something more intentional, like The New You Transformation coaching package. If you’re not sure, drop me a note and I’ll be happy to answer your questions.

Sister, regardless of whatever brave steps you might choose to take to get intentional about your thought life, I pray that you’ll start each day in the Word and begin using the Trap & Transform principle to take captive your thoughts and make them line up with the truth. Trust me, it will lead to peace and wholeness like you’ve never experienced before.
