Even More Than a Sparrow

If I was to tell you that God values your life even more than a sparrow, what would you say?

A.  Why are you comparing me to a sparrow?

B.  I can’t stand birds.  Can you pick another illustration point?

C.  Of course He does.  I’m made in His image and the bird certainly is not!

D.  I have no idea what that means.  Please do explain.

If you had asked me this question last week, I would have picked answers A, B, and C.

So what changed?

After watching Priscilla Shirer’s brand new Bible Study DVD, Seed, my entire world was turned upside down as I was forced to consider God’s economy and my inherent value as a child of God.  Priscilla’s powerful message in session one laid the foundation for a wonderfully, transparent in-real-life Bible Study discussion, filled with confessions of what it meant to my sisters-in-Christ to be overlooked, forgotten, and completely run over by others.  The Holy Spirit brought to the surfaces wounds inflicted by words, and lack there of, as the result of simply living in a falling world.  Each one of us recognized that our feeling of being overlooked is universal and unavoidable.

As I have struggled with my own feelings of begin overlooked, God drew me deep into the Scriptures to discover what it means to live a life of significance, which inspired and necessitated this new resource.  See, I’d been dwelling in the land of feeling overlooked, demanding the attention of others to satisfy my cravings for God.  Yes, the Lord has designed the Body of Christ to meet our needs, to a degree, but the first portion must come from the Lord (Romans 12).

So what does all this business about being overlooked have to do with a sparrow?

Everything.

In Matthew 10:31, the Word explains a fact the we, modern-Americans, are clueless about.  A sparrow, in Biblical times, was the least expensive food that could ever be purchased in a market.  One sparrow was worth half a penny.  Priscilla explained in her DVD teaching that it was customary for two sparrows to be purchased for the price of one cent, but more often four would be the usual order and a fifth would be thrown it for free.  So what’s the value of the fifth one?  Nothing!  Yet what is of no value to man is of utter value before God.  Our Heavenly Father, Creator, and Maker does not forget the fifth sparrow.  Nor does He forget us!

Psalm 84:3
Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may have her young— a place near your altar,
O LORD Almighty, my King and my God.

If God does not forget the sparrow — if He even provides for her home right near His altar — will He not also provide for you?

God sees you.  You no longer need to dwell in the land of overlooked. It is time to move out and find your true significance established by your Creator God.

So what is standing your way?

Get a move on, girlfriend…

  1. I love birds and watch them out of my writing window and I think of that verse often when I do. My sweet 16 year old daughter gave me a beautiful necklace with a pendant of engraved birds on one side and that verse on the other. It reminds me every time I wear it of how much He loves me.

    1. Shelly, I will definitely take note of the sparrows from now on. That’s such a special gift from your daughter. Where did she find it?

  2. When I realize how significant I am to God, it overwhelms me. It causes me to want to know Him more and more. I find that as I draw closer to Him, His love overflows to others. I’m not dependent on other people for my significance.

    Blessings and love,
    Debbie
