Transformed Tuesday: Abounding Love

We were so excited to see how many great posts were linked up last week for Transformed Tuesday. They were filled with stories about God’s work and insights about His word!

Don’t we all need this sort of encouragement in the beginning of our week?

Life’s hard, friends. We face obstacles in our thinking and living every day, which is why we need to encourage one another to press on in our faith. So let’s do that today, with our second edition of Transformed Tuesday!

Let’s Focus on Philippians 1:9

Prayer. Love. Knowledge. Discernment.

What do those for things have to do with one another?

Well, for the disciple, Paul, it was his love for the believers in Philippi that connected them all together. His heart yearned with affection for his brothers and sisters, and so he turned those emotions into a powerful prayer.

Philippians 1:8-11 ESV

For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus. And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

How interesting, for when I desire to see something happen in someone else, my inclination is to boss them into it. I want to give a lecture and present a case for what they ought to do. But Paul, while he devoted hours to teaching, also spent careful time in prayer for those he loved. Will we do the same?

Before we open our mouths to give a lecture or offer our opinion, will we stop to pray?

It is also intriguing to me to see that Paul started his prayer with a focus on love. Maybe that is because loving others is so stinking hard? What does it look like to follow Paul’s pattern not only in our prayers but also in how we live with what another?

I wonder, too, if we focused on intentionally loving others — in an abounding love sort of way — if that would have an impact on our lives in terms of how God pours out the blessing of receiving His knowledge and discernment? Could it be that God’s commandment to love one another is really a hidden promise of blessing? Hmm. Something to think about.

So as we think of this particular verse, may we choose this day to embrace Paul’s example of how to pray for one another and discipline ourselves to offer the gift of abounding love to others!

Heavenly Father, we want to follow Paul’s example set for us in how we pray for each other.  Help us, Oh God, to be a people that pray before we even say a word. And also, Lord, that we would be incredibly conscious of the call to love one another — with an abounding type of love. God, may we fall in line with Your will for us to love others, and in turn, we thank you in advance for the undeserved gifts of your knowledge and discernment.  In Jesus’ Strong Name. Amen.

Who is God calling you to love for with an abounding love?

Do you have a story about this type of love. Share it with us today!

And who may the Lord be calling you to pray for today?

We’d love to hear not only your stories, but your prayers, too!
