Transformed Tuesday: Don’t Give Up

I don’t know what is going to happen to them.

I’m so worried about their future.

I can’t do this with her one more day.

I’m so worn down by his life choices.

I don’t think I can walk this road any longer.

I’m so tempted to give in…

Are you in a situation with a friend or family member in which you just want to give up?

If so, you’re not alone.

We all have someone we’re called to love…whose hard to love. Whether it is a personality conflict, past wounds, or a life choice in which we disagree, loving others can be wearisome. As we look at Galatians 6:9, we shouldn’t be surprised!  God specifically tells us to not become weary in doing good, and offers us hope for the harvest ahead as we choose to invest in that {difficult} relationship!

Do not become weary in doing good,
for at the proper time we will
reap a harvest if we do not give up.

If we read beyond Galatians 6:9, we can see in verse 10 that weariness may be a by-product of simply being in relationships.

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people,
especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

Weariness happens.

Serving those we love will be a tiresome task, my friends.  Whether we are 13, 23, 42, or 68, we will struggle to “do good” for those we love, in particular for our brothers and sisters in Christ.  When we can’t see the results of our efforts, it is tempting to give up.

In our family, we have this unspoken agreement to not give up on one another, no matter how ugly it gets. And with two strong-willed souls {ahem, me…and my middle daughter} living under the same roof, there are many moments in which we {and those around us} feel wearisome over the conflict and tensions that surround our interactions. As much as we love each other {to the moon and back}, we often find ourselves caught in escalating emotions and differing opinions.  It requires a determination to capture the emotions, especially the ones tempting us to throw in the towel, and choose to pick up the baton and run the race of “doing good” with more dedication.

So let me ask you, who do you want to give up?

And what would it look like to keep on doing good…

When your should-be best friend talks behind your back and ditches you for a guy…

Will you “do good” by forgiving her and yet being honest with her about how much it hurts to be left for a guy?

When your mom offers a you an instructive word, that you hear as criticism…

Will you “do good” by receiving her comments with a teachable heart instead of a defensive response?

When you learn about a family in your community struggling to make ends meet…

Will you “do good” by bringing them a warm meal and offering to wash a load of their clothes?

When your brother or sister or son or daughter walks a rebellious road…

Will you “do good” by calling him or her into account and praying for them, even when there seems to be no result?

Doing good is never easy, especially when it comes to relationships without results. Waiting for the harvest may take an eternity.  But our motivation to “do good” ought to come from a decision to obey God.  We can find the desire to “do good” as we put our hope in knowing that God is at work.

So next time you hear yourself, or even someone else, talking about being weary in doing good in a relationships, what about offering the challenge to not give up?

God’s plan is for a harvest, in which He wants to use each of us in the process of living a life transformed.

  1. Elisa, I’m so excited to have found you here and at ElisaPulliam! Your “planning” post hit exactly where I am muddling about lately. I’m really looking forward to digging in and learning more from you.
    Thank you!
    Melinda

  2. I really appreciate this post, as well as the idea of waiting for the harvest. God has given me a few people in particular to love until the harvest is ready and I would hate to think I’d given up on loving and serving them just before the field is ripe! 🙂
