Transformed Tuesday: What are you overflowing with?

May I ask you a question that might cause you to squirm but have the power to change how you live your life?

What are you overflowing with?

In other words, what is coming out, or overflowing, from within your heart, mind, and soul? As you consider your words, thoughts, and actions, how do they reflect what is happening behind the scenes in your beliefs and emotions?  Does your “overflow” show signs of being connected to a deep source of hope, truth, and perspective? Or is it indicative of a dried up and worn down well?

As you think on this matter of “overflow,” would you be willing to consider what would those who know you best say you overflow with, too? In other words, how is your “overflow” impacting others?

Overflow with Hope
I can’t hep but think of a waterfall as I reflect on my own “overflowing.”  We recently spent a few days at a campground nestled in the woods. Tucked inside the property was an impressive waterfall, with water rushing down the mountain side and over the edge of rocks, splashing and swooshing forth on the ground below. The roar of the water was so great, you had to shout to hear each other.  Yet when we returned to the same campground two weeks later, we noticed that the sound of the waterfall was so quiet you could hear each other whisper.  Why the change in the waterfall?  Because three days of record rainfall that marked our first trip, caused the source of the waterfall to be filled to overflowing.  Whereas, two weeks later, with no significant rain, the waterfall slowed down to to a quiet trickle.

It sounds a lot like our spiritual life, doesn’t it?  The greater the amount of water filling up the source of the waterfall, the more impressive…and even more beautiful…the falls. And likewise, the deeper the connection we have with God as our source of truth, joy, peace, love, and hope, the more we will overflow with Him in us coming forth. And isn’t that more beautiful than what often flows out of us?

Time in His word, sitting quietly in prayer, soaking in His truths through sermons and messages, reading literature that expands our understanding of Scripture, and listening to worship music that declares His wonders, are more than spiritual disciplines. These choice investments of our time will replenish our soul and fill us up to overflowing with the God of Hope, giving space and time and resources for the Holy Spirit to draw upon. As I recently heard a wise woman share, God asks us to join us in His work. He does 50%, we do 50%. He won’t change what we overflow without our participation in the process. We need to be willing to let Him doing the filling.

Simply imagine the return on that investment when what we overflow impacts those we love the most.

The source matters…when it comes to a waterfall…and to us as children of God.

So will you take time to consider your source, and maybe what needs to change in your life, with a sobering reality that your overflow impacts others, too?

May the God of Hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him,
so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the holy spirit.
