Transformed Tuesday: How do you get rid of loneliness?

Have you ever struggled with loneliness? I’m sure you have, because we all do at some point. If you haven’t, you should definitely share your secret with us!

Feeling alone, left out, and like I did not fit in started for me at a young age.  Of course, having no sisters and only brothers didn’t help. I remember climbing the Mimosa tree outside my home and disappearing in the leaves and flowers for hours. But it was in that lonely place that my friendship with God began. I would talk to him for hours pouring out my heart.

I have called you friends...

He met me there and never left me alone.

Looking back on my childhood, I can see that my trust and friendship with the Lord was born out of loneliness. It was out of those times that the Lord became my best friend. I love the Truth found in Proverbs 18:24 that says, “He sticks closer than a brother.”

As a young adult, my loneliness led me to always want a guy in my life, which always led to more insecurities and feeling alone. Once I surrendered my will to the Lord Jesus, and was saved, I realized He loves me so much and calls me friend (John 15:15). My search for a person to fill my loneliness hole was replaced by trusting Jesus to do just that!

So, what can you do to get rid of loneliness?

  1. Remember Jesus is right there beside you, He is your best friend who sticks closer than a brother. See Proverbs 18:24.
  2. Talk with Him openly, honestly, daily for that is what true prayer really is.  To develop your prayer life, download this resource.
  3. Don’t forget that Jesus calls us friends! Read: Judges 6:17, John 15:15, Matthew 11:30.
  4. Reach out to someone who is lonely, in need or hurting. In times when I have been my loneliest and have reached out to those in need I always felt uplifted and blessed.  See James 1:27, Philippians 2:3.
  5. Knowing the Lord Jesus and believing His word gives hope, peace, comfort, wisdom and strength for each day! Look up:  1 Peter 5:7, Psalm 23:4, 38:9, 62:8, Hebrews 13:5, Romans 8:35-39, 1 John 4:13, 2 Tim 4:16-18, Proverbs 15:13-14

There is nothing like the comfort of Scripture truths to turn our loneliness feelings around. At first, it will be a choice to believe what God says about His companionship, but as we walk in the Truth we will be transformed by it, too.

How do you deal with loneliness?

Next week’s key verse:

Galatians 1:10 NLT

Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God.
If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant.

  1. Thank you for sharing this. I grew up without any close friends and those I made in college I rarely see or talk to. I am grateful for so many people throughout my life who have been friendly to me but for some reason I have a hard time making deep solid friendships. Besides my husband, I don’t have anyone whom I regularly see that I talk with or do things with. I guess I am trying to say that I know too well that feeling of loneliness. For me, having an online community of like-minded Christians has helped me cope with this. I still long for women friends, but I know God is working on me in this area. I think I’ll take your list and start using it as a mini bible study. Thank you again for opening your heart about this. It has been something on my heart for quite some time.
