Three Beautiful Truths About Our Worth

for_moms_buttonOur beauty is not defined by our outward appearance.

There’s no denying that it’s part of who we are. But as Proverbs 31:30 tells us, “Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”

True and lasting beauty isn’t what we see in the mirror.

We don’t know about you, moms, but that’s comforting to us when we’re in our yoga pants and ponytail, throwing together the kids’ lunches at 6 a.m. We love knowing that our beauty is rooted in how God manifests His power in our lives.

So it’s no surprise that Satan tries to undermine our God-given capacity for beauty by relentlessly seducing us with his lies.

Three Truths About Our Worth

Here are three of his most common deceptions and how we as moms can pursue lasting beauty by embracing God’s truths:

One

Satan’s Ugly Lie: You’re not competent enough.

God’s Beautiful Truth: Whether it’s the two-year-old tantrum in the grocery store or the morose teen who just doesn’t seem to respect us anymore, it can feel like we don’t measure up to what this mothering gig requires. The truth is, we don’t measure up. And that’s okay. When we acknowledge our weakness and reach out for His help, we enable His beauty to shine through us — even in the midst of challenging situations.

He will give us exactly what we need.

Ephesians 2:10 ESV says, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

Two

Satan’s Ugly Lie: You’re not smart enough.

God’s Beautiful Truth: As young mommies, we were both challenged with the special needs diagnoses of our children. Trying to navigate all the resources and information seemed overwhelming. And yet so much was riding on it. Time and time again, we both simply asked God to give us insight and wisdom in situations where we were lost.

His sufficiency working through us enabled us to act and respond in ways we could not on our own.

James 1:5 ESV says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

Three

Satan’s Ugly Lie: Your circumstances aren’t good enough.

God’s Beautiful Truth: The “I’d be happier if …” mentality keeps us focused on our circumstances instead of on the joy that is readily available to us in any situation. This can be hard to see in the midst of the challenging stages of motherhood–or when we focus on the mom who seems to have it all together (although she rarely does).

Choosing to be grateful for what we have and how we were made opens our hearts to a more permanent sense of joy and contentment than circumstantial happiness.

Psalm 37:4 ESV says, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

Moms, don’t be deceived. As we embrace God’s truth, we reflect His power and glory.

And that reflection is always beautiful.

  1. Beautiful and wise and just what I needed today! You hit on the three things I’ve been frustrated about lately (even though I know they are lies and not from God.) Thank you so much for this encouragement and truth. Looking forward to sharing it.

    1. {Melinda} You are so welcome, Jennifer. I think we all struggle with these things — we know in our hearts that these things aren’t true, but it’s hard to get them out of our heads, especially in times of discouragement.

  2. Great post – it reminds me of a book by Nancy Leigh DeMoss, called “Lies Women Believe” (and “Lies Young Women Believe”). It’s so easy to listen to the lies whispered from the devil, the world, and the flesh… and so hard to fight against them and trust in God’s truth. Wish that wasn’t true, but it is.

So glad I linked up near you at Thrive@Home! Have a blessed day!

  3. {Melinda} I love that book, Elizabeth. Yes, God has been working on my about trust …. trusting Him in all circumstances, regardless of what my feelings are telling me. It’s a constant process of drawing on the Holy Spirit’s power. I have a hard time staying in that place of trust.

  4. As an older mom, I still struggle with these things. I am famous for comparing myself to others. Thank you for sharing these truths with us today!
