The Day A Dream Came True

That dream rolled around in my brain for a while before I ever admitted aloud what I wanted.

At one point I considered putting that title on my list of career options, but I never did because I didn’t want to place it up there only to have it topple down one day. Still, I harbored that tiny dream half out of sight.

Will you give your dream to God?

What was that title, that dream?

Editor.

I love to perfect punctuation, I happily claim the title of grammar aficionado, and I silently (and sometimes not-so-silently) correct billboards, road signs, and commercials when they veer into the realm of inaccurate English.

I’m pretty much a goner when it comes to a friend asking me if I’d mind reading over this and sharing my thoughts.

I should have known better than to put God in a box like that and not just come right out and say that I wanted to do this.

I should have known better than to believe that He would let that strength and joy wallow where I would never use it to its full potential.

I should have known better than to think He wouldn’t do what He had done so often before.

That seems to be a delight of His, I’ve found–taking my deepest dreams and making them come true. So why didn’t I think He would do the same with this one? ‘Tis a story He’s telling over and over in my life:

I love You, and I gave You this dream for a reason…watch me make it reality.

He did it when I embraced the call to write; He did it when my trembling hand took His and boarded a plane for Costa Rica; He did it with this editing gig, too.

Claim It

Don’t be afraid to claim that dream, sister. He may already be making a way for it to come true.

It was only when I mentioned my dream aloud that God took over and ran with it. In order for Him to work in our lives, He doesn’t need our permission; but Jesus is a gentleman. He doesn’t barge in; He knocks (Revelation 3:20). How is He knocking on the door to your heart today? What door to what dream is He asking you to open to Him?

Claim that dream. Open that door.

Ask It

“Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.” Proverbs 15:22 (ESV)

The two people I voiced my dream to were my parents. And then, soul quaking, I asked them what they thought. That they were wholeheartedly behind me and not at all against my plan surprised me (not because they don’t always support my dreams, but because wasn’t yet sure about it!). Their response confirmed that this was a step of faith I was meant to take.

Who can you talk to today about your dream? Whose advice should you seek?

A word of caution: I pray you find the support that will enable you to stand for the dream God has planted in your heart; but know that sometimes a lack of support is not necessarily a reason to abandon your dream. Receiving negative feedback is cause to pause, but God has called His children to do daring things before that no one understood (just ask Noah).

Do It

Matthew 14: 22-33, “But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” (ESV)

My first step was to create a page on my blog outlining my love of smoothing words until they say just what we want them to.

Your first step may look a whole lot different. Your dream may be to write, and your first step may be to reach for your pen (or keyboard). Your dream may be to teach, and your first step may be to apply for that job or that school. Your dream may be to create natural care products, and your first step may be to explore Etsy (like my friend, Melinda).

Whatever your dream, pursue that first step, get out of the boat, and walk. But, whatever you do, don’t look down. Keep your eyes on Jesus, the One who gave you the dream.
