Living with a Lighter Load and a Thankful Heart

We all have those days when everything just seems to be going wrong. You woke up late. Spilled coffee all over your shirt. Your car won’t start. And when it finally does, you know you’re going to be late for work.

It’s hard to be thankful when nothing seems to be going in your favor.

Fix Your Eyes

What if I told you that you could be happy 24/7, no matter what life may throw your way?

There is beauty even on your worst day. Praising God opens your eyes to see this beauty. And to realize that life is just too short to walk around with a sour attitude. John 10:10 NCV says, “A thief comes to steal and kill and destroy, but I came to give life—life in all its fullness.”

Satan will do everything he can do steal your joy.

But when we choose to focus on our blessings rather than our disappointments, our load becomes lighter and we can enjoy life much more than we used to. {click to tweet}

Mark 4:35-41 tells of when Jesus fell asleep in a boat with His followers. When a storm came, they woke Jesus up frantically. But the storm didn’t affect Jesus one bit. Likewise, we shouldn’t allow our circumstances to affect our mood or stress us out. We can also have peace in the midst of a storm. But to have this peace, we need to be in a constant state of worship.

Negative people are generally not as happy as others. And it’s not because they might not have the greatest life. In fact, these people could be the ones who have it all: a big house, a nice job, enough money to support their family. But since they have a negative perspective of everything that happens to them, they are often far less happy than someone who doesn’t have as many material blessings.

Yet, in Christ, we have the promise of eternity.

In Christ, we always have a reason to be thankful and joyful. {click to tweet}

2 Corinthians 4:18 NCV

We set our eyes not on what we see but on what we cannot see.
What we see will last only a short time,
but what we cannot see will last forever.

The bad day that you might be having isn’t going to last forever. In fact, it will be gone by tomorrow. It’s not worth making yourself miserable by allowing your circumstances to affect your mood. Especially when God calls us  to set our eyes on the unseen rather than what’s around us.

Philippians 4:8 NCV

Brothers and sisters, think about the things that are good and worthy of praise.
Think about the things that are true and honorable and right and pure and beautiful and respected.

The thoughts that you allow into your mind, and not necessarily your circumstances, are leading to your attitude. A negative perspective does not solve anything. In fact, it makes things much worse than they actually are.

Yet when we thank God for our blessings, our load becomes lighter.

And we realize that what we were stressing over really wasn’t a big deal at all!

A thankful heart always has faith that things will turn out for the best. A thankful heart is always grateful for what is rather than upset about what is not. A thankful heart lives with a much lighter load than a negative one. A thankful heart is able to see circumstances from God’s perspective.

Joy is always available to a heart that is thankful. {click to tweet}

God continues to bless us with gifts throughout the day. However, these gifts do not always come in material form. Look out of your window. He paints a sunrise for you every morning and a sunset for you every evening. Thanking Jesus for these many gifts that can be easily taken for granted brings the beauty out of even the darkest day.

So the next time you feel like things just aren’t going your way, choose to approach these small difficulties with a smile. You’ll be surprised just how much lighter your load becomes when, no matter what life throws your way, you choose to be thankful.
