Transformed Tuesday: Change Your Mind

Have you ever heard someone say:

“It’s not my fault, I just can’t help the way I feel.”

If you’re willing to be open and honest with yourself, you’d probably admit that you have muttered something to that extent before (I know I have). As a young woman, I can definitely say that I am not immune to having many feelings. Things effect me. It’s easy to take on everything that happens in our lives and allow it to change who we are.

About a year ago, I remember getting all ready to grab dinner with a girl friend of mine. After about 20 minutes of waiting in the restaurant booth alone, I received a text from her desperately explaining to me that she completely forgot that she had made plans with somebody else and wasn’t going to be able to make it. In that moment, my selfishness and immaturity took over and got the best of me.

I didn’t respond in a rude way to my friend, but deep in my heart, I hadn’t let it go, either.

I was nursing this offense, holding onto a simple mistake, and allowing it to take root in my heart and grow into a bigger issue.

While it should have just been an easy thing for me to let blow over, I found myself consumed with hurt and frustration. The worst part is, I felt completely, absolutely, 100% validated in these grudge-holding, negative feelings that I was harboring. Why? Because I truly believed that I just couldn’t help the way that I felt. It was an unfortunate situation, and it was completely okay for it to disappoint me, but the way it was sticking to my soul like a glob of Elmer’s glue was not so pretty.

Something we have to remember is that life happens. Things will occur that are upsetting, hurtful, and disappointing. It is completely normal for us to be upset, but we don’t need to turn these hurts into chains that bind us and ruin the rest of our days, weeks, months, or maybe even years.

Perhaps we think we can’t “change how we feel,” however, we can change how we think and change what thoughts we allow to take root. {click to tweet}

Romans 12:2 says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” It is normal, typical, worldly, and natural to stick to our own ways, hold grudges, and live in negativity. But it is supernatural to allow God to transform us and renew our minds, captivate our thoughts, and change the way we think.

If someone cuts you off in traffic on the highway, you can get angry and let it ruin your day, or you can take a deep breath and hand it over to God.

If you have a misunderstanding with a friend, you can allow it to ruin your friendship, or you can have the mind and heart of Christ.

If your parents don’t quite understand your dreams and passions, you can harbor that hurtful difficulty and let it separate you from the ones who love you, or you can believe that God is able and in control of the situation.

The wonderful thing is: we can choose to be set free simply by the renewing of our minds. Freedom is a choice. We can choose to hold onto these hurt feelings, or we can allow God to change our minds and our thought process, and I can promise you that it will change your heart.

We can change the way we think and it will change the way we feel. Having the mind of Christ will help us to gain a positive attitude, light, grace, forgiveness, and so much love. Allowing God to consume our thoughts will help us to heal and grow as godly women.

So will you change your mind today?
