Transformed Tuesday: When Wise Men Wait

Ever wonder where the Wise Men learned of the star?

Who told them to look for a star in the first place?

How did they learn of its significance?

Why would wise men from the East search the skies for Israel’s Light?

Wise Men Wait

Perhaps it was the prophet Daniel who made the difference.

Though little is known of the mysterious visitors from the East, history tells us magi were a special group of priests from Persia.  Skilled in astronomy, mathematics, and science, these men were highly respected and often called upon to interpret dreams.

None compared to Daniel.

Serving as chief administrator of Babylon and Medo-Persia, Daniel is remembered as the most famous wise man within these kingdoms.  So impressed by his dream interpretations and wisdom, the king gave him the highest rank to oversee and instruct all the other wise men, and Daniel’s teachings may have lasted throughout the centuries between his time and Christ’s birth.

Daniel 2:48 NKJV

Then the king promoted Daniel and gave him many gifts; and he made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief administrator over all the wise men of Babylon.

As chief administrator, Daniel made it his priority to teach these men knowledge, not from the world, but from God Himself—teaching of Old Testament truth and giving them insight to the details surrounding the prophecies of the coming Messiah.

These men could link the star to the prophet Balaam who foretold of Jacob’s Star (Numbers 24:17). Other events such as the rebuilding of the Jerusalem walls (Ezra 9:9) could serve as a countdown pinpointing the time of the Savior’s birth.

No one knows for sure how these men heard of the coming of this Jewish King.

Regardless, they were wise to listen and learn.  At some point the magi heard the stories of the Messiah and the wondrous star announcing His birth.

They wondered.

They watched.

They waited.

Are we?

2 Timothy 1:13

Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.

Wise men listen and rejoice to the sound of His coming. [tweetable]

This Christmas, set aside moments to wonder, watch, and wait.

  1. Mitzi, i really liked your reflection here – the way you tied things together. I hadn’t connected it up like that really. Funnily enough (not really – God knew) I wrote on Daniel too! Just later on.
