The Only Jesus They May Ever See

A few weeks ago, I was talking with a woman I have come to consider a mentor, and what she said stuck with me:

“Your job is to be Christ to the people around you, because that’s the only Jesus they may ever see.”

For many years I have prayed earnestly that God would show me the calling He has placed on my life. Each time one word resounded in my head and heart, and that word was love.

I was never quite sure what that meant specifically for me. I knew that the Bible talked about loving others and loving God, but what did that one word mean? What was God trying to show me?

That night I was praying about what my mentor had said, and the words that came to mind were these: Your purpose is to love and serve My people, in whatever way I have for you that day, and then return to the Giver of that love, not other people, to be fulfilled and rejuvenated.

That gave me pause.

You May Be the Only Jesus They Ever See

I tend to turn to others for spiritual guidance instead of God. He is always forefront in my decision-making, but I often consult others without first asking Him for guidance in the situation. I will ask who I should talk with and when, but I don’t ask His Spirit to show me what I ought to do, the best way to love others, to be the only Jesus they may ever see, in particular situations.

When I read The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom for the first time recently, I came across her prayer:

“Lord Jesus, I offer myself for Your people. In any way. Anyplace. Any time.”

I long to live out that prayer as my own each day of my life.

Will you join me?

You may be the only Jesus they ever see.
