Church: A Place to Go and a Call to Be

As Christians, we are supposed to be the hands and feet of Christ. We are supposed to show His love. We’re not supposed to go to church on Wednesday night or Saturday evening or Sunday morning and say “Hallelujah!” “Amen!” “Praise the Lord,” and walk away, doing nothing with that overflow of joy. Don’t get me wrong, it’s wonderful to rejoice and praise God in the family of believers at church, to bring your requests to God, knowing they will be answered.Becoming the Church

But God calls us to do more.

Everywhere I look (at church and elsewhere), I see hurting people, whether their needs are physical, emotional, spiritual, or a combination. I see a God who has called us to love one another in word and deed. We are told about the relationship between faith and works. And yet so often I see Christians, including myself, overlooking needs that He has equipped us to meet.

So how can we do this, be the church? How can we reach out with Christ’s love?

1. Read our Bibles.

If we don’t make an effort to read God’s word, to absorb it and apply it to our lives, how will we know what it is that He desires from His children?

2. Pray.

Pray for people’s needs as you see them. Ask God to place people in your life who you can help that day. Pray for aptly spoken words so you can encourage those around you.

3. Take Action.

Do odd jobs. Offer to do housework, mow lawns, rake leaves, or shovel snow. Babysit for free every once in a while for a mother who needs a break. Read to an elderly person. If you are good at a particular subject in school, perhaps you could tutor someone who is struggling in that subject.

The possibilities are there to help others, if our eyes are open. Listen. When people talk to you, listen to what they are saying. Be fully present in the conversation, not thinking about what happened five minutes ago or everything on your to-do list for the day. Ask God for discernment and strength to hear people’s hearts, to know their deepest needs, and to respond as His church.

How can you answer God’s call to be the church today?
