The Fear of Failure

At some point, we all fear something. As children we are scared of monsters under the bed, the boogeyman in the closet, or in the case of one of my nieces. . .the tooth fairy. But, as we grow, fear begins to take on a more real form in our lives.

Have you ever been afraid to fail?

Have you ever let the fear of failing keep you from going after something you wanted?

Maybe it’s applying to your dream school, giving your testimony at church, or even holding off on dating because you are fearful of what a new relationship could bring.

[Tweet “Why do we let the fear of failing keep us from pursing our goals and dreams?”]

There have been many times when I have let the fear of failing stop me.

I didn’t try out for my high school dance team for years because I was scared. I was scared of embarrassing myself because I didn’t think I was as good a dancer as some of the other girls. My senior year I finally mustered up the courage to try out and I made the team. Why had I been so afraid?

Facing the Fear of Failure

Fear is a tactic from the enemy.

Satan loves to use fear to stop us from not only accomplishing our goals, but fully seeking God’s will for our lives. If we’re too afraid to answer the calling God has put on our hearts, then we can’t further His Kingdom, which works out great for Satan. We can’t give of ourselves and fully obey God when we let fear stop us.

I can’t help but think of David when he faced Goliath on the battle field. Here was a young guy with only a sling shot up against this giant beast. I can only imagine what David felt as he turned toward Goliath ready to fight. Was David afraid of failing?

Look at what Scripture tell us:

“David said to the Philistine, ‘You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head.” 1 Samuel 17: 45-46 NIV

Did you notice what David said to Goliath?

I come against you in the name of Lord Almighty!

You see, God has already won the battle for us.  The battle was won when the Lamb, the Son of God, was slain on the cross.

I’m sure that David did feel some fear when he first faced Goliath BUT he knew that God was in the fight with him and that God’s plan was not going to fail. Ultimately David knew He couldn’t fail because he was fulfilling God’s plan for him.

We shouldn’t let our fear hold us back.

That’s exactly what Satan wants from us. He starts with placing seeds of doubt.

You’re not good enough.

You can’t do that.

Someone else already beat you to it so there’s no point.

It’s human nature to fear, but in those moments when the enemy is attacking you, telling you that you can’t do it or you’re not good enough, turn that ugly F-word, Fear, into another F-word . . . Faith.

What seeds of doubt has the enemy placed in your life?

Is the fear of failing holding you back from pursing God’s plan for your life?

How can you conquer your fears?
