How to Spend Your Summer Wisely

I don’t know about you, but when the weather is nice outside, I tend to have zero motivation to do any kind of work. Why stay cooped up inside all day when the sun is shining outside?

But just because it is summer doesn’t mean there isn’t still work to be done. Yes, it is tempting to blow off all tasks and spend these sunny days out by the pool. Besides, there is a reason it’s called summer vacation!

However, Proverbs 13:4 NLT says,

Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper.

Notice that it doesn’t say summer excuses laziness. God will honor your hard work, despite what season it may be.

Yet believe it or not, it is possible to spend your time wisely while still leaving room for fun. There is nothing wrong with spending a portion of your day at the mall with friends or even relaxing in a hammock! It is possible to organize your time so that you don’t have to sacrifice any area of your life.

How to Spend Your Summer Wisely

So how can you spend your time wisely this summer while still leaving time for fun?

1) Write down your goals for the summer.

Are you hoping to finally open an Etsy shop or begin writing that book? Once you have your big goal for the summer, break it down into smaller goals that you can accomplish daily.

If you don’t have a work-related goal, create one! Ask yourself what it is that you enjoy doing during your spare time. Knitting? Painting? Playing basketball? From there, you can create your big-picture goal. Do you hope to become a better basketball player so you can make the team for next season?

You have at least two months of no school, so be sure to use this time wisely!

2) Create a schedule for yourself.

Life can be full of random interruptions. However, you should at least have an idea of how you want to spend your days this summer.

For example: have a quiet time in the morning then spend two hours practicing piano, one hour reading a book, another getting physical exercise, then the rest of the day with friends. Doing this will decrease chances of allowing time to slip by “unnoticed,” and you will realize just how valuable your time is. (Yes, even in the summer!)

3) Write a list of things you want to do this summer.

There have been countless times I have gone into summer with several ideas of how to spend my free time, but then the months fly by—and before long, it’s time for school to start back!

It’s easy to allow time to slip by when you have nothing to do. But if you write down a list of these ideas beforehand, you can plan your days accordingly.

For example: if you’ve ever wanted to start a Bible study with your friends, what better time to begin than during the summer? Or perhaps you’d like to take a few visits to the local nursing home, plan a day road trip to the beach with your siblings, or maybe spend an afternoon at the park for a picnic.

When writing your list, try to think outside the box. What are some activities you have never done before, or games you have never played? Is there any kind of volunteer work you have always wanted to participate in?

Once you have your list, try to squeeze in at least two of these activities each week.

God has entrusted us with the gift of 24 hours each day. And while socialization, relaxation, and work are all good, they each need to be balanced in our lives.

Psalms 90:12 NCV says,

Teach us how short our lives really are, so that we may be wise.

Ask God to give you wisdom on how to spend your time this summer. That way, when all of your friends are upset about how fast the break went by, you’ll be able to look back at your memorable summer without any regrets.

What are some of your goals and desires for your time this summer?
