How did you do on the “How’s Your Love Life?” and “Going on a Joy Hunt” quizzes? Whether you scored high or low, there is good news! Jesus can teach us how to grow the captivating characteristics of love and joy.

Let’s focus on just one point this week.

[Tweet “When we are filled with God’s perfect love, we can’t help but love others the same way.”]

Perfect love.

The fantasy side of me thinks of perfect love as a get away in Paris with my man on my arm. Spending our days sipping away on lattes, watching the lovely people going by.

Wait . . . sounds like I’ve watched too many mushy movies over Christmas break.

Inside, we get this expectation – we want to one day fall in love like the movies. But the movies aren’t like real life. You can’t meet someone, discovery they are the one you’ve been looking for, get married and live happily ever after all in 2 hours!

Let’s say today you are from another planet. You keep hearing this word “love” and have no idea what it means. You decide to sit down and watch a movie or listen to a song on the radio for the sole purpose of trying to define love.

What would you say love is?

I think I might come to the conclusion love is using another person to get what I want. When you’re “in love” you get attention, affection, adoration . . .

Yes, it seems the question every one is asking when it comes to love is “What’s in it for me?”

How opposite of what Jesus says love is. 1 Corinthians 13 tells us love is not self-seeking. In fact, 1 John 3:16 says”

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.

When we choose to love others the way Jesus loved others, we will stand out. When we are not hateful, envious, rude, or self-seeking we are beautifully different. When we do not keep score or take joy when others fail, we become absolutely gorgeous and we glorify Jesus too!

This week, watch how you love. In your friendships or at home, are your actions truly unselfish or secretly are you asking, “What’s in it for me?”
