23 Blast Will Make You See Life Differently

In our family, movie watching is right up there as one of our favorite activities.
We’ll pull out a game here and there, but watching a movie is our first choice. The problem, however, is how few movies fit our diverse interests and ages — we’ve got nine year old twins (son and daughter) plus two teen girls. However, there is one movie category we all love — any football story when the underdog comes out on top. That’s why I was so glad to see a brand new one release, 23 Blast, which is a true story about a young man whose passion for football was nearly obliterated by a sudden infection that left him blind.

Without giving away the story, I can promise you this:

Even though it was given a PG-13 rating, we felt it was appropriate for our nine years, after previewing with a houseful of teen girls — all of whom were happy to keep our “1 screen at a time” rule as they found themselves immersed in the movie.

The girls agreed, it was worth watching and thinking seriously about. We talked about what happens when you find your identity in what you do and how that can wreck your life when it’s taken away from you. And we talked about what happens when you believe in someone, in spite of what they think about themselves and what the world has to say about being “normal.”

23 Blast is more than a football movie. It’s a real life story that has the power to change your real life perspective and start one of those life-changing conversations with the next generation.

About 23 Blast

From the Producers . . .

When a high school football star is suddenly stricken with irreversible, total blindness, he must decide whether to live a safe, protected life or to summon the courage through playing football to step back into the world. 23 Blast is based on the amazing, true story of Travis Freeman.

A typical teenager growing up in a small town in Kentucky, Travis is a local hero on and off the field. In the prime of his youth, he is unexpectedly stricken with an infection that destroys his optic nerve; he becomes blind overnight.

Under the influence of parents who love him, a physical therapist who challenges him, a coach who inspires him, and a best friend who he cannot bear to leave behind, Travis shows us what true bravery is by competing on the gridiron, helping his team advance to the State playoffs. We follow Travis and Jerry Baker, his closest friend, from the time they meet on the football field as kids through high school. Jerry’s attraction to the dark side of teenage temptations threatens to pull the friends apart. It is only on the football field where they truly connect.

Depicting a story of hope triumphing over despair, of courage and faith overcoming fear and of victory prevailing over adversity, 23 Blast is designed to encourage and uplift audiences.

What are some of our other favorite football movies?

If you’ve not seen these movies, I’d recommend checking out their Plugged In reviews to see if the content and message is a good fit for your family:

Facing the Giants is our all-time favorite, simply because the message to glorify God whether you win or lose is a timeless truth to impress upon our hearts.

Remember the Titans rallies our school’s super-fan juices at the start of every football season.

The Blind Side is a favorite because we got this thing for supporting Sarah Drew, although there is some content that has kept the littles from seeing this movie.

We Are Marshall is a heartbreaking true but inspiring story, a little too mature for the littles, too.
