{Week 4} TWOgether: Cool to Be Kind

The ‘80’s was an awesome time to grow up! We had some great music, but some of the lyrics were really . . . well, dumb. For instance, the hit “Cruel to Be Kind” when I was in  9th grade. You can look it up on You Tube, if you want a few laughs.

As weird as the lyrics are, read them and see if you don’t think it’s the code of many girls today:

Oh, I can’t take another heartache
Though you say you’re my friend, I’m at my wits end
You say your love is bona fide
But that don’t coincide with the things that you do
And when I ask you to be nice, you say

You gotta be
Cruel to be kind in the right measure
Cruel to be kind it’s a very good sign
Cruel to be kind means that I love you
Baby, you gotta be cruel to be kind

[Tweet “In our culture, meanness has become the norm among girls and women. I’m not sure where we went wrong.”]

Wouldn’t it be so cool if we made it cool to be kind?

What if, instead of looking down on the girl who doesn’t have the “right” shoes, jeans or social calendar we rejected the sarcastic comment, the insult or the silent treatment usually given out?

Each one of us has more influence than we think we do. If we begin to take a step back from the commonplace cruelty among girls, others would pay attention. We’d become magnetic!

God tells us choosing to be kind isn’t get a step toward becoming beautiful; it is also one of the ways we worship Him. Micah 6:8 says, “He has showed you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

When I show kindness to another person, I am worshiping God, showing Him how much I love Him. So is the opposite true? When I choose to be unkind, am I embarrassing God? I’m dishonoring Him for sure!

It’s not just for God’s benefit or even for the person I am being kind to when I choose to go against the norm.

Kindness comes with a reward. Remember, what we sow, we reap.

In the next 24 hours you will have an opportunity to choose. Cruel or kind. It might be toward your brother or sister, on social media or when texting about that girl at school. Make the magnetic move. Make it cool to be kind.

  1. I hope you are enjoying Magnetic! I know it is hard to keep going – to keep up your commitment! Don’t give up! What we sow (God’ word into our hearts) we’ll reap (becoming more like Him!) You can do this!
