I Will Trust in You

I will trust in the Lord my God with all my heart and seek his purposes for my life.

Psalm 28:7

The Lord is my strength and my shield;
    my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.
My heart leaps for joy,
    and with my song I praise him.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
    and lean not on your own understanding;
 in all your ways submit to him,
    and he will make your paths straight.

Lord, I am so grateful that you promise to be my strength and my shield. Thank you for being a faithful God who I can turn to and open my heart up to in any and every situation. Thank you for helping me in every moment, even when I forget to turn to you.

God I want to trust you with all my being and give you full access to my heart.

God, I want my heart to leap for joy at the thought of you.

And yet, I know there are secret places, tucked away in my heart, in which I store up parts of my life that I think are untouchable by you. Untouchable because I’m afraid about what you’ll do with those parts if I give you access.

Lord, why do I feel this way when you are indeed trustworthy? Is it because I’m looking at you through wounded eyes? Is it because I think you’ll fail me, shame me, and hurt me the way I’ve experienced in my flesh?

Oh God, forgive me for not believing you are who you say you are. Fill my heart and mind with increasing trust in your character as a faithful, loving, just, and merciful God who wants good for His daughter.

Fill my heart with a song of praise to you, O Lord.

Fill me with joy, Father, as I trust in you more.

Remind me to not lean on my own understanding, but instead, give all my thoughts and hopes and dreams to you. To give my plans to you . . . moment by moment. . . a submit all my ways unto you.

God, I ask you to make my paths straight.

Work yourself more fully into my heart, mind, and soul, that I may sense your presence, hear your voice, and heed your leading in every area of my life. In the Strong Name of Jesus.

God, I ask you to make my paths straight.

Trusting God isn’t my natural tendency, especially as a big idea girl with lots of plans for the future swirling in my head. Nonetheless, I haven’t been able to escape this clear instruction from God to trust Him with all my heart, as Proverbs 3:5-6 was the theme verse of the elementary school my daughters attended. Again and again we would recite . . .

Trust in the Lord with all your heart

and lean not on your own understanding;

in all your ways submit to him,

and he will make your paths straight.

Trusting God has never felt more real than now, as my once little kindergartener rounds the corner of her last semester of her senior year of high school. Bless her precious planning heart, as she’s just like her mama and desperately wants to know what’s next. But in this season in her life, it is all about the not knowing. The waiting. And learning more fully how to trust God with all her heart!

She’s waiting on college acceptances, and rejections, and financial aid packages yet to be determined. She’s eager to eliminate possibilities and clarify the direction of her life. Yet the reality is that even those earthly predicators of her future can’t begin to reveal God’s straight path ahead. He can turn her circumstances at a moment’s notice and throw a curve ball whenever He likes, just as He did in relocating us right before her junior year in high school.

Her bucket list dreams were dashed in a tumultuous upheaval. And yet, that was God’s straight path for her . . . one in which she had to learn to trust Him more.

My girl is not the only one having to put her trust in God. I am most certainly overwhelmed by the ending of a long-lived season. Where’s my little girl? How did she grow up so darn fast? What can I do to slow down time and keep her under my wing? Is she really ready to fly? Can I really trust God will all my heart, believing that He can care for her better than I?

And so, together, mother and daughter becoming co-equal sisters in Christ are learning to walk in deeper faith. We are learning to trust Him more.

How is God calling you to bravely trust Him with all your heart and yield to His purposes for your life . . . and those you love?
