How to Cultivate a Friendship Where Christ Dwells Richly

I will make it a habit to speak in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.

Verse

Colossians 3:16 NLT

Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives.
Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives.
Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.

***

Speak to God

Lord God, I want your message to dwell richly in my life . . . to fill me completely.

God, may you truth permeate my heart and mind to such a degree that it overflows from me organically and powerfully.

Lord, I want your Word to be in me, so that I may teach and counsel with your wisdom and not my own thoughts or opinions.

God, how dramatically different our lives would be if we spoke in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs . . . . singing to you continually with a thankful heart.

Lord, tune our ear to your Word and open our hearts to receive the fullness of Christ, so that our voices may come together as one as we sing of thankfulness to you and your wisdom to all.

In the Strong Name of Jesus, Amen.

I will make it a habit to speak in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.

I’m sure we looked like any other pair of friends catching up over a cup of coffee, but what you might not notice from afar is what binds us together. It was more than just history.

We met only a few days after our youngest babes where born. She was determined to make a place for herself in my friendship circle, at a time when I really wasn’t interested in growing it larger. I already felt pulled in too many directions. But by the grace of God, she was persistent, especially in her desires to get me to work with her to start a moms group.

I’m not sure how she broke through my “no, thank you, not now, not ever,” but she did.

For two years, we met bi-weekly at her home with doors swung wide open to any woman who wanted to spend time digging into Scripture. We called it WOWAM . . . Women With a Mission . . . and I had a big vision for it to be the next women’s ministry taking over the United States, while she just wanted us to focus on the gals in our local community.

We both agreed, however, that our mission was about growing deeper in our personal relationship with the Lord while encouraging one another to walk out our faith with our families and friends.

Our little group was really an attempt at sharing what we already found worth treasuring in our friendship.

A friendship in which we were passionate about encouraging one another in our faith.

A friendship that invited the message of Christ to grow in our hearts.

A friendship in which we sometimes became each others teacher and other times coach, striving always to speak out the wisdom of God.

A friendship where our words often sounded like the psalmist, echoing truths of the greatest hymns and songs we’d belt out each Sunday worship.

More than a decade later . . . and now living in separate states . . . our friendship is still one that I count on to set my heart right before the Lord and call me deeper into a relationship with Him.

That’s because it’s upon the fullness of Christ dwelling richly in us, that we are bound together.

Whether across the miles by phone or across the table from each other sharing a cup of coffee, she is my sister in Christ who always speaks to me in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with the wisdom of God guiding her words . . . because the fullness of Christ most definitely dwells in her heart.

How is God calling you to cultivate and invest in friendships that fulfill the call of Colossians 3:16?
