Find the True Source of Refreshment

I will strive to be filled up by Jesus Christ, the Living Water, and not others.

Verse

John 4:10  (NIV)

Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

John 7:38  (NIV)

Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.

God, thank you for providing us with a kind of refreshment and filling that we can not find anywhere else.

Thank you, God, that all we have to do is ask you for what we need, and you promise to provide.

We don’t have to jump through spiritual hoops. We don’t have to do anything to prove our worth to you. We simply need to come to you, as we are, and trust you to care for our souls, our hearts, our minds, our bodies, our needs.

Give us eyes to see your provisions, especially when what we ask for looks different from what you deliver.

God, we do want the gift of Living Water most of all. We want Jesus to flow through us and fill us up. Please root out in us anything that is standing in the way. Please show us our sin, bitterness, greed, selfishness, impure motives, and unforgiveness, that we may repent and be forgiven by you, and make room for Jesus to dwell more fully in our lives. Please show us the idols we make of people and things, settling for false Gods instead of you. May nothing and no one else

May we find our complete satisfaction in you, the Living Water.

In the Strong Name of Jesus, Amen.

I will strive to be filled up by Jesus Christ, the Living Water, and not others.

Where do you go to get filled up? How do you tend to that ache in your soul? That longing for approval? Who has turned into your mini-savior? To take from you the pain in your heart? To carry a load that feels too heavy to bear up under one more step?

It’s so easy to turn to that in-the-flesh friend or spouse or coworker or even child to meet a need that only the cross can satisfy.

On the one hand, we are supposed to lean into those we’re doing life within the body of Christ. They are our family. We are knit together and meant to serve one another. But wouldn’t you agree that there is this fine line between serving and sucking one another dry?

Yes, we need to be there for each other. But we also need to quick to own our limits and admit our needs for the Savior that can satisfy our souls with a kind of refreshment that isn’t found anywhere else.

But we also need to quick to own our limits and admit our needs for the Savior that can satisfy our souls with a kind of refreshment that isn’t found anywhere else.

We all have this deep need to be filled up by Jesus himself, and yet we run to everyone else instead. But why?  I happen to think the reason is the same for us as it was for the Samaritan women. Jesus stood before her, offering to fill her life to the brim with the fullness of Himself, the Living Water. Can you think of anything more satisfying? But she didn’t recognize this gift because she was too focused on herself. I’m not saying she was narcissistic but rather consumed with an identity shaped by her sin and past.

She couldn’t shake off “what was” to embrace “what is.”

Jesus stood before her, seeing a woman made in the image of God. He knew her sin, but also knew that wasn’t her identity. It was her behavior, not her worth.

Her past not a predictor for her future.

The Son of God, the Messiah, the Redeemer and Savior and Rescuerer of Souls offered her life by faith through grace not works.

Doesn’t He do the same for us? Jesus pours out himself, the Living Water, to wash us clean and fill our lives with a love that can penetrate into every nook and cranny of our hearts and minds. His love changes us. His presence refuels us. His work in our lives transforms us.  So will we receive what He has to offer us — Living Water to satisfy our parched and weary souls from now until eternity.

How are you turning to everyone else instead of Jesus for a soul-filling satisfaction? What does it look like to turn to Jesus and receive what He has to offer you?
