Walk the Walk, Talk the Talk

I will seek justice, love mercy, walk humbly all of my days.

Verse

Micah 6:8 NIV

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

God, thank you that you don’t require of us anything we’re not capable of.

Thank you for giving us such simple and clear instructions in Your Word.

Really, all we have to do is say yes to You. Our responsibility is simply to put your Word into action. And yet, as simple as that sounds, how difficult it is for us as our flesh and mind battle against the Spirit and truth.

Lord, we ask you for an infusion of your presence and a conviction of your truth so that we may do you what you require of us . . . to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you.

Yes, Lord, may we walk in the strength and power You provide through Jesus Christ and the working of the Holy Spirit so that we can fulfill Your purposes.

In the Strong Name of Jesus, Amen.

I will seek justice, love mercy, walk humbly all of my days.

Seek Justice. Love Mercy. Walk Humbly.

How often do we see these words imprinted on a t-shirt, journal, or an eye-catching social media graphic? It’s such a perfect little ditty for a great slogan that we might be able to say that God was really was the first to launch a marketing campaign. Yet, God’s Word was never mean to be used for feel-good sound bites. It’s meant to be read, reflected upon, and applied. So let’s go there. Let’s think about what these words really mean in our everyday living.

What are we doing to seek justice?

How do we seek justice as a home-keeper or school teacher? A writer or ministry leader? As a mom or a friend? Do we have to become a lawyer or serve with the International Justice Mission? Do we have to be a missionary in an oppressed country? Or is justice something that we can seek out right where God has already planted us while also prayerfully and financially supporting those who are reaching in beyond our walls to seek out justice for all mankind?

What are we doing to fulfill the call to love mercy?

If we love mercy, how does that manifest in our lives? Does it change the way we respond to offenses? Is it in the words we use to speak of others? Is it evidenced by our actions? Is it seen in our choice to serve instead of being served, even if the one receiving our sacrifice “isn’t worth it” from our human perspective?

What does it look like to walk humbly with our God?

How do we walk humbly with God, when we can’t even see God? Is this call about walking in such a way that we’re continually aware of God’s presence and yielded to His purposes? Does this play out in our family relationships? Our workplaces? In public social settings? If being humble is not about low self-worth, but rather thinking of others in light of the cross, then how are we fulfilling this call? Are we following in Christ’s example, in the way He walked humbly in obedience to His Father on our behalf (Philippians 2)?

If we’re going to call ourselves Christians, ought we not also walk the walk and talk the talk that reflects the heart of God and His purposes?

It may not be easy. It certainly will be messy. But if we yield our flesh to the Spirit’s leading, I’m pretty certain that our Father in Heaven, through the power of Christ at work in our lives, will show us exactly how to seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God.

What is your perspective on this call from God to seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him?
