Are you bearing God’s image?

Have you ever noticed, upon meeting a child for the first time, you can easily match up the “grown-up” they belong to?

Sometimes they are the spitting image of their mom or dad, and other times it’s the similarity to their parent’s mannerisms, behavior, or even dress that gives them away.

Are you bearing God's image?

Our family is no different. Everyone agrees that my kids look just like my husband. In fact, I’ve lost track of the number of times that people say, “She looks just like Carl,” or “He’s a mini version of your husband.” I get excited when I come across a baby picture of mine that captures a look or expression of one of my children. However, when I show it to other people, most can’t see the resemblance.

“Really? Don’t you think my kids look like me, even a little?”

My kids might not be mini-me’s, but if you spend enough time with us, you’ll be assured they’re mine. That’s because, as a work-from-home mom, we spend a lot of time together. They’ve had years to get to know me and learn my ways. I want them to be just like me, but only when it reflects the best of me. I am delighted when my children do the good things I do. But I am not so happy when I see my bad habits show up in the way they do life.

Each of us bears the image of our creator.

God intentionally created us in his image. (Genesis 1:27) Not only that, everything in this earth produces after its own likeness. (Genesis 1:12,24) By default we reflect our creator. However, the way we do life reflects who we spend the most time with.

In order to do this, we must grow in our knowledge of Christ. We cannot grow to be like someone we don’t know. The deeper our knowledge of God and His ways, the deeper our understanding of Him and the more we become like Him.

The good news is that bearing God’s image isn’t about saying and doing the right thing.

Knowledge alone is not enough, though. God’s Word must impact our hearts. When we let truth sink down into our soul through repetition and meditation of His promises, our thinking begins to change (Romans 12:2).

Spiritual disciplines such as prayer, worship, scripture reading, stillness, and fasting will cultivate our affection, trust, and relationship with God. This time spent together will change us to be more like Him and to love like Him.

The good news is that bearing God’s image isn’t about saying and doing the right things.

It’s about letting His love transform our hearts, which is the key to finding our identity in Christ.

Your life can’t help but be changed for the better when this happens. As my kids get older, they look less and less like me. But that’s okay because I’d rather them look like their Heavenly Father.
