Do you desire a radical change in heart?

The world is doing a great job at overloading us with everything and nothing, pulling us down into its strongholds of comparisons, worry and fear. So I have asked myself, does it really have to be this way? Do you and I have a better life waiting for us to grab hold of?

What can we do?

Do you desire a radical change in heart?

The same restoration God promised His children in the Bible, He extends to us today. We read in Ezekiel 36 about God promising Israel that He will restore them and bring them back to their country. But the restoration here is not only in the literal sense but also spiritual.

And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart.

Ezekiel 36:26 NLT

The change God desired to bring in their lives is the same He desires to give us.

A “new heart” and a “new spirit” is the promise of spiritual regeneration.

Our flesh is doomed to sin. But when God touches our hearts and fills us with His presence, something changes. Something new happens to us that enable us to do good—to make a meaningful impact. It is a heart that desires to please God. It will no longer be about what “I” want but all about what “He” wants. It is a “less of me and more of Him” mindset that will rule our minds.

God’s transformative work does not stop at a change of heart but includes “a new spirit.”

He gives us the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus to empower us to fulfill God’s Word. In and of ourselves we are not able to obey God’s Word, but through His Holy Spirit, He guides us in love into the obedience of the Cross. The same obedience Jesus portrayed by giving up His life for us, He pours into us so that we can follow and obey God’s Word beyond any human understanding.

It speaks of a change that changes your life. The same change Saul faced on the road to Damascus when God changed his heart. Saul became Paul and he became a living testimony of the changed man one becomes when God’s hand infiltrates in your life. Paul’s purpose became to preach the pure Gospel of Grace. Today, in Christ we are even more ensured of an eternal change through the perfect work of Jesus on the Cross:

Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold new things have come.

2 Corinthians 5:17

We read in verse 27 that the Holy Spirit changes the heart to cause us to “follow” the Lord as He creates a desire in us to do what is humanly impossible. There is only one way we can live to please the Lord and that is through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. What the Law of Moses could not do, God does through His Spirit within us. His Spirit replaces our corruptible and stony hearts with a “new heart” and a “new spirit”.

Why is this so important?

What is taking place in our hearts is of vital importance when it comes to our testimony for Christ. The Bible often refers to the heart as being important and then we do not even talk about it being the organ that keeps us physically alive. The Bible explains the heart as the root of all good and evil as follows:

A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.

Luke 6:46 NLT

As a believer in Christ, we are His representatives on earth. What we say or do reflects our position in Him and our lives may be the only Bible people ever read. So you are left with a reflection to chew on: First, your words matter and second, is your life worth the read?

What do you feed your heart? The pleasures of the world or the Word of God.

We have a choice. Every day.
