More Than a Name

“I don’t mean to sound prideful, but my name ACTUALLY MEANS something in this town.”

I cringed inside as her words rolled out. They landed flat in front of me as I nodded my head numbly in reply. Gently, I steered the conversation in another direction, but her admission hung densely in the air like the humidity of August and I remembered when I wanted that to be true for me.

I wanted to be somebody.

I wanted a name that meant something, a name that carried weight and commanded respect. I spent years gathering grades, awards, and degrees as if more initials after my name would imply that I was worthy.

Much of my life was spent blinded to God as I sacrificed holy things because I was filled to overflowing with myself.

I identified with where this woman stood, and I knew exactly how dangerous her faultline was. I still struggle with the pull from the world that says, “If you aren’t well known then you aren’t known at all.”

More than a Name

This, dear hearts, is a bold face lie.

For you created my inmost being;

You knit me together in my mother’s womb.

My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place,

when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.

Your eyes saw my unformed body;

all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

– Psalm 139:13,15,16

You have always been known to the Father.

The creator of the world doesn’t just know you by name, He KNOWS you. He knows every fiber of muscle and every tendon connected to bone. He knows every contour of your heart. He recognizes each ambition and gift you possess. There is nothing about you that shocks or surprises him. You can’t send him packing with your bad habits, but neither can you impress him with your works.

He understands that as human beings one of our deepest longings is to be seen and fully known. Who better to do this for us, then the one who designed and created us?

If your heart has wandered down the path of self-promotion I encourage you to stop dead in your tracks and repent.

Ask God to forgive you for forgetting who He is and who you are to Him.

Pray that He will remove anything from your life that separates you from Him.

Ask Him to make you smaller than the shadow of His cross.

Make it your life’s mission that no one sees you, they can only see Him. Pray that God will bring you the kind of holy intervention that only He carries and be prepared for a life where the only person who knows your name is the only one that matters
