What You Really Need from God Begins with You

How often do you find yourself telling God what you need, fully expecting a clear and quick response?

Are there times where it feels like He isn’t showing up, falling short, neglecting to follow through when it comes to your needs?

I know that may sound a little brazen, but I think we all too often turn God into a magic genie, expecting that our wishes should be His commands while not putting any skin in the game. We’re busy running in our first-world hamster wheel, believing that God should keep up with us. But what if the way we’re doing life is all wrong? What if our priorities have crowded God out instead of making room for Him to have first place attention in our lives?

Is it possible that we’re so distracted that we’re not even seeing God work?

Is there a chance that we feel distant from God because we stopped connecting with Him?

Is it possible that we need to hit the holy pause button and slow our lives down to make room in our schedules for God to be a priority appointment?

What we really need from God begins with us.

What You Really Need from God Begins with You

I’m not talking about checking “God time” off our spiritual “to do” list, but rather sincerely giving Him our full attention for a set-aside time each day.

Ten minutes. In Scripture. One Chapter. One prayer-saturated conversation.

It’s not about finding the perfect corner with the most inspiring coffee mug.

It’s not about having all sorts of fancy pens to journal in your Bible.

It’s not about feeling all warm and fuzzy inside because of a great ah-ha moment.

Now don’t get me wrong . . . I love all those things, but they don’t define my time with God.

They don’t give me even a sliver of the riches God offers when I hit the holy pause and get into His Word.

The Word gives us the life we crave because the Word is Jesus and the fullness of life we need.

Jesus is our everything. Everything we want. Everything we need. Everything from now until eternity.

So why are we busy filling our lives with anything less than Jesus?

Why does an appointment with God get shoved aside while an hour is consumed scrolling Facebook and watching Netflix?

Why do the dishes have to be done and laundry folded, before we read a chapter of Scripture and pray?

I know. Tough truths to consider.

But stay in the uncomfortableness of it all and let it motivate you into change.

What you need is right at your fingertips.

The Lord promises to be your helper, but will you let Him help you?

John 14:26 AMP

But the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will help you remember everything that I have told you.

If you’re not in the Word, how will you know His voice? How can you hear His guiding on this on this journey to eternity?

I lived the first half of my life without Jesus, and the first ten years of my faith without reading the Word. I know what it’s like to live without hope, defeated, and without direction.

Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

But for the last decade, I’ve been reading Scripture and seeking God almost daily. While my circumstances are still challenging, God has infused my life with unshakable hope.

Through time in the Word, we gain what I call the #ThreePs:

1. Perspective

God will give us His perspective as we read the Word, remembering that this is not our forever home and that our lives are meant to be lived for Him. (Matthew 6:21, Matthew 22:37, Hebrews 13:14, 1 Peter 2:11)

2. Power

God will remind us that the same power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead is alive and active in us through the work of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:11, Ephesians 1:19-20)

3. Purpose

God will reveal to us His purposes for our lives, aligning our dreams to join Him in His work (Ephesians 2:10, Romans 8:28, Philippians 1:27).

Now tell me you can’t use a fresh filling of God’s perspective, power, and purpose in your life today!

Maybe you don’t believe it’s possible.

But I am believing for you and begging you to give it a shot.
