Finding your Way to Delight in the Lord

Are you going to follow the world or are you going to follow God?
Our decision may either turn out to be costly or rewarding.
When we follow our own desires and the ways of the world we may feel satisfied for the moment but there are consequences we may not have thought of. When we choose our own ways and that of the world, who are we serving?
“... ‘It is because your ancestors were unfaithful to me. They worshiped other gods and served them. They abandoned me and did not obey my word.” (Jeremiah 16:11, NLT)
Finding Your Way to Delight in the Lord
In the Bible times, the meaning of these words may have been literal in that the Israelites worshiped other gods as they often struggled with the notion of serving an invisible God who loved them and wanted to be good to them even if they didn’t deserve it. The audience of Jeremiah 16 was in an even worse spot of bother:
And you are even worse than your ancestors! You stubbornly follow your own evil desires and refuse to listen to me.
Jeremiah 16:12 NLT

For us today we may find ourselves in a similar compromising situation if we refuse to listen to God’s Word and follow our own advice.

Our choice may often turn out costly as we end up finding ourselves in situations that threatens our relationships and grounding in life. It may even be that we feel overwhelmed, lost and not sure how to find our way back to what it is we are supposed to be doing with our lives.
If that is you, take heart because Jesus’ mercy is always waiting for you in the rise of a new day after you endured the darkness of the night. He has been watching and waiting for you to find your way back and He is always graciously willing to lead you to cross the bridge back to Him:
... through him God reconciled everything to himself… This includes you who were once far away from God. You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions. Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault.
Colossians 1:19-‬22 NLT
Knowing this, God empowers us to step out of our own selfish and destructive ways and into His will for us. Instead of following our own ideas to fulfill our heart’s desires that always end up falling short, He gives us a way to be fulfilled continuously:
Take delight in the Lord , and he will give you your heart’s desires.
Psalms 37:4 NLT

God’s way seems to come with a guarantee: as you delight in Him, He WILL give you the desires of your heart.

How do you delight in Him?
To delight is to do something that gives you satisfaction and in which you take great pleasure. So how do we find our satisfaction and pleasure in Jesus?
It all starts by knowing Him – to delight in someone, we need to know them. The more we come to know God – Who He is, how He loves us and what He has done for us, the more we will delight in Him.

We delight in Him if we understand what we have in Him.

We do not look for other people or things to fulfill us, but to Jesus. When we reach that point where we understand that nothing (no relationship, house, car, job or amount of money) can truly satisfy us like Jesus can, we have a new sense on delight in Him as we know and serve Him for Who He is.

Our delight in the Lord is not based on circumstances that changes but as we get to know Him and experience Him on a personal level we realize more and more that He never changes. He is always good.
Look at the sunset or sunrise, the flowers, and the nature scenes playing out every day. As we catch a glimpse of the majestic works of God’s creative works, we can delight in Him.
Noticing God’s presence in our lives and the fingerprints He leaves behind through the touch of a loved one, the smile of a friend or the moments of peace in a busy world; we reach a new sense of satisfaction in Him.
Pondering on the perfect work of Jesus on the Cross and what He has done, we can rest and walk in His blessings.
Read a Psalm or sing a worship song to delight in the Lord.
Be grateful for the day and rejoice in Him and be glad. It will fill your heart as the gift of another day dawns on you.
Find something to pray for. As we surrender to Him the cares of our hearts and praise Him for who He is, we delight in Him.

Find someone and share the goodness of God.

As we engage with others and share about His goodness, we delight in Him.
May each day become about delighting in Jesus and as the words of Psalm 37:4 take root in your heart, you will begin to set other things aside as you realize that all you need is found in Him.
Remember, we can delight in the Lord because He first delighted in us.
