When you think of the “Shepherd,” what comes to mind?
Do you imagine a children’s storybook Bible scene with a man looking watchfully over His flock?
Or maybe you recall the parable in which Jesus explains, “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?” (Luke 15:4).
While a shepherd may not be a career that our modern-day culture esteems, the role is certainly one of great significance.
A shepherd must be watchful, attentive, protective, brave, responsive, determined, relentless, attune, resourceful.
What great attributes and qualities for an ordinary man or woman. Imagine what that means when we find all of that and more in our God?
The Lord is my shepherd;
Psalm 23:1-3 NLT
I have all that I need.
He lets me rest in green meadows;
he leads me beside peaceful streams.
He renews my strength.
He guides me along right paths,
bringing honor to his name.
Yes, the Lord is our shepherd. He is our provider of all our needs. He is the one that leads us to lush dwelling places. He is the one or ushers in peace, even in the middle of a storm. He is our strength renewer. He is our right path guider. He does all this and more, always bringing honor to His name.
Let’s Pray
Lord, I thank you that you are my shepherd. In you, I have all that I need. You are the one that will lead to me rest. You are the one who provides lasting peace. You alone can renew my strength. You are my guide along every path. May I trust you as my shepherd and become ever more attune with your voice, that the way I live may always honor your name.
In the Strong Name of Jesus, Amen.
