When you hear the word “peace,” what comes to mind? Is it a location or a feeling? Is it an experience or a way of being?
What if peace wasn’t “out there” but rather a quantifiable gift from the Lord that came through His presence indwelling in you?
Yes, the Lord is Peace. Those are the words Gideon chose to use of God, after His encounter with Him and experiencing His provisions in the face of his own insecurities and fears.
But the Lord said to him, “Peace to you. Don’t be afraid, for you will not die.” So Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and called it The Lord Is Peace. It is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites today.
Judges 6:23-24 CSB
Peace is also an attribute of Jesus, first foretold in Isaiah:
For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6 CSB
Paul describes God as the God of Peace in his letter to the Romans:
The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.
Romans 16:20 CSB
It is safe to say the peace is inherent to the God-head and does not simply describe a feeling. But what is so profound is that God also created us to experience peace through His indwelling in us.
You will keep the mind that is dependent on you in perfect peace, for it is trusting in you.
Isaiah 26:3 CSB
That peace isn’t simply a mindset or a practice of getting our thoughts aligned with God’s Word. Yes, we need to cultivate that discipline (2 Corinthians 10:5 and Romans 12:2), but we also can experience the gift of peace residing in us as the Spirit of God takes up full residences in our heart and mind and soul. In that Isaiah 26:3 verse, “mind” is translated from the Hebrew word, “yetser” which means, “form, framing, purpose, framework; form: pottery, graven image, man (as formed from the dust); purpose, imagination, device (intellectual framework)” (source).
Our entire being can be infused with God’s perfect peace. As His vessels, His pottery, His image-bearers, we take on peace as an attribute as we yield our worry to His ways and trust in His purposes ever more fully.
We don’t have to strive for peace. We simply get to receive it.
Heavenly Father, thank You for being our Perfect Peace. Thank You for giving us the gift of peace, even when the circumstances around us are spinning out of control. Thank You for making a way for us to move beyond what we feel and into the lasting promise of peace through trusting in You. Steady our minds, Lord, on Your truth, that we may live in filled by Your peace.
In the Strong Name of Jesus, Amen
