The Lord is My Banner | Encounter God #11

What do you picture when you think of a banner?

Do you envision the ones you find in a high school gym, recognizing a championship?

Do you see a banner hanging on a wall, announcing the reason for a celebration?

Maybe you see two high-schoolers carrying a banner in front of the cheerleader, flag corp, and marching band in the Memorial Day Parade?

When we think of the Lord as our Banner, I actually think all those various kinds of banners in light of this name that Moses gave to the Lord:

Moses built an altar there and named it Yahweh-Nissi (which means “the Lord is my banner”).

Exodus 17:15

The Israelites just defeated the Amakalites, which was the start of a war that would exist from generation to generation. The battle was not easy. Moses sent Joshua out with the men to face the front lines, while he, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. Obeying the Lord’s instructions, Moses had to lift his hands and the staff in the air continually for the Israelites to prevail. I don’t know about you, but I’d be failing in a few minutes.

I suspect that as hard as Moses tried to muster up his own strength, this battle was beyond him.

Can you relate?

But God never expected him to fight it alone. Nor did He expect Joshua and the men to go to war alone.

God provided support through Aaron and Hur and a solid rock on which Moses to steady himself. Together, they faced the battle. Together, by the Lord’s doing, they defeated the Amakalites.

Together . . . is the lesson for us to learn and apply. God never meant for us to go through life alone. We are designed to be connected, one to another.

We are to win this battle against the enemy together and hang a banner for each one, like state champions.

We are to celebrate those victories and milestones of growth, hanging a banner of God’s faithfulness at every gathering.

We are to march together in unity, behind the banner of the Lord, toward the next event and trial and victory.

Yes, the Banner of the Lord, should we choose to acknowledge it, is above us, in front of us, and behind us, declaring God’s faithfulness today and forevermore.

Heavenly Father, thank You that Your provisions for us include each other. You never intended for us to fight the enemy alone. You want us to obey you corporately. You want us to march forward in unity as one body strengthened by each other. Please, Lord, forgive us when we silo offer and forsake each other. Bring us together, Lord, under Your banner.

In the Strong Name of Jesus, Amen
