What comes to mind when you hear the declaration that “God is God?”
Does it feel like the final word? It certainly does so for me. So maybe there is nothing further to discuss?
But what if there is? What led to the declaration that God is God in this passage from Deuteronomy 7?
Know that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps his gracious covenant loyalty for a thousand generations with those who love him and keep his commands.
Deuteronomy 7:9 CSB
The Lord is God. He is faithful. He keeps His gracious covenant loyalty for a thousand generations . . .with those who love Him and keep His commands. Yes, this is truth. But what is the context?
Was there a risk of God not being loyal? Or was there a matter of God’s people forgetting who God was and what their loyalty should look like?
As we dig in deeper we can see the later is true, not only for the Israelites, but also for us.
What is standing in the way of our loyalty to God?
What do our idols look like? What do we worship apart from God? What has our affections more than God?
Are we living set apart, distinctly different than the culture, as we align with God’s best?
At this time in our life, amidst the COVID-19 epidemic, the way we’ve gone about loving God and keeping His commandments has most definitely been exposed. The very things we’ve clung to no longer stand. But God does. He is calling us back home, to His heart, to His provisions, to heed His commands, and rest in His promises.
Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us with a loyal love, a kind love, a gracious love. Forgive us, God, for making idols and for disobeying your commands . . . for not loving you above all. Help us to love You, and You alone, God.
In the Strong Name of Jesus, Amen
