God is the King of kings and Lord of lords | Encounter God #19

How well do you know the story of God?

Is your understanding of Scripture a high-level view, where you get the gist of who God is and what He has done?

Or do you understand the context where His character is revealed personally, His commands are relevant to your life today, and His promises carry hope for what is to come?

It is too easy to pick and choose what we want to know and believe about God. But in doing so, we forsake knowing the richness of the God who made us in His image and ordained our lives with a glorious purpose. We miss out on the fuel that ignites our faith in times of suffering and trial.

King of kings and Lord of lords | Encounter God #19

In many ways, we view God just like we do those we see on social media. A life without context. Joy without suffering. Success without failure. Grieving without hope.

We need to move out of the scrolling mentality of our faith and into an intimate abiding relationship with God.

Isn’t that exactly what Paul is encouraging Timothy to do when we jump into 1 Timothy 6? This letter is commissioning Timothy and us to live out our faith, fighting the good fight and standing strong. But that faith is built upon unquestionable truth and eternal perspective, remembering who God says is:

13 In the presence of God, who gives life to all, and of Christ Jesus, who gave a good confession before Pontius Pilate, I charge you to keep this command without fault or failure until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. God will bring this about in his own time. He is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings, and the Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see, to him be honor and eternal power. Amen.

1 Timothy 6:13-16 CSB

Are you living where Jesus is the center of your life, where He is truly Lord of lords? The Greek word for “Lord” is kyrios, which means “to whom a person or thing belongs; about which he has power deciding; the title of God, The Messiah” (blueletterbible.org).

Imagine, for a moment, if you saw yourself as “owned” by God? Would that change how you treat yourself? With what you choose to do with your gifts and talents? How you spend your money?

As I share in this week’s teaching, I’ve only spent the second half of my life with my knee bent and heart turned toward Jesus. Even though I’ve called Him Lord of my life, my flesh conveys another story. It’s a process, friends. We get to imperfectly yield our lives to Jesus. But in the yielding, we become more and more like Him. That not only changes our lives . . . it changes our legacy too.

God, You are the Sovereign one. You are King of kings and Lord of lords. We bless You for who You are. We praise You for being in relationship with us mere mortals, the creation of Your very own hands. We surrender our lives to You. May You take up Your rightful ownership in the way we use our gifts, talents, and resources for Your glory. May we become more like You as You take up more residence in our hearts and minds.

In the Strong Name of Jesus, Amen
