Do you really believe that the Lord is good? Or do you find yourself in a situation in which you question God’s goodness because of your circumstances or past experiences?
It is all too easy to judge God through the lens of our feelings and experiences. We evaluate His goodness based on the way He answers our prayers instead of recognizing how He can still keep His promises even when the outcome doesn’t match the one we had designed in our head.
A cancer diagnosis . . . and we wonder if God is still good.
A failed relationship . . . and we wonder if God is still good.
A rejected proposal or job application . . . and we wonder if God is still good.
A misunderstood intention . . . and we wonder if God is still good.
Maybe we wonder if He was ever good.
For some of us, it doesn’t take much to rattle our faith and cause us to wander in doubt. For others, it’s easy to cling to the promise the Word delivers so profoundly.
Taste and see that the Lord is good.Psalm 34:8
Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!
Yes, God is good, and we kind find great joy when we take refuge in Him. As we read all of Psalm 34, we find that God’s goodness and true joy when we put our confident hope in Him, discovering that in the Lord, we find freedom from our fears and all our needs met. (Psalm 34:4, 9). Not only that, but He hears us when we cry out and are crushed.
The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help.Psalm 34:17-18 NLT
He rescues them from all their troubles.
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted;
he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.
So those very moments in which we don’t God’s goodness is an invitation to turn toward His promises and full protection. Yes, we have our part to play in the relationship. There’s this dance between what God is calling us to do and what God is promising to give us. But our circumstances, no matter what they are, do not define the goodness of God.
God, you are so good. God, you are so good. God, you are so good, so good to me. May the words of this hymn and the meditation of this passage from Scripture be on my heart and mind and lips every single day. Keep me, Lord, from doubting without pursuing more of your goodness as I cling to your promises on this journey to eternity.In the Strong Name of Jesus, Amen
