One Step at a Time

One Step at a Time

Have you ever witnessed something spectacular that blows your mind? Maybe it’s a “Humans Are Awesome” video on YouTube or something that happens in real life, and you just sit there shaking your head and saying, “How is that possible? People just amaze me!” Of course, as Christians, we believe God is the one who makes us so amazing and gives us the talents and abilities we possess, which brings me to one of my favorite stories in the Bible. Matthew records the story in the first book of the gospels, chapter 14, verses 22-32. Jesus has just finished feeding…

MAKING A DIFFERENCE ONE PERSON AT A TIME

Making a Difference One Person at a Time

Have you ever felt so overwhelmed by the needs of those around you that you felt almost paralyzed because you didn’t know how to help or what to do? Do you struggle to feel like you’re making a difference, even if it is just one person at a time? I am a chaplain at a Christian boarding high school in Georgia, and after hurricane Irma hit Florida, we made a decision take a group of students and head down to help with the cleanup efforts. So, one week after the storm slammed into the west coast of Florida, we loaded…

When Stress Hits Hard

When Stress Hits Hard

A friend of mine shared a verse with me today, and it made me think. The verse is found in Psalm 119:143: As pressure and stress bear down on me, I find joy in your commands. All 176 verses in this chapter focus on the law of God, His commandments, and how they are useful to guide us through life.  However, this verse caught my attention as I read it amidst the rest of the chapter. I mean, when is there not pressure and stress in our lives!?! It’s a constant force that we live with. It might seem counter-intuitive but…

Committing Our Plans to God

Committing Our Plans to God

She stood before me with tears in her eyes—they weren’t tears of sadness but of nervousness and fear. One of my dear students was going to be speaking in front of an audience of 300 students and parents in 30 minutes, and she was terrified. She had her devotional all planned out, but the nerves were overwhelming her at the moment and she was worried about her message and how it sounded. I pulled out my phone and opened my Bible app and searched for Proverbs 16:3: “Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.” I reminded…

Following God's Example for Mentoring and Motherhood

Following God’s Example for Mentoring and Motherhood

My mama’s heart hurt for my 14-year-old daughter as we drove to her last soccer game of the season. She had been a starter the year before, but for whatever reason, she had been a bench warmer this year. A few new girls had joined the team, but she didn’t feel like they were any better than she was, so she questioned the coach’s judgment in keeping her on the sidelines. She kept reiterating that she just wanted the coach to put her in so she could prove herself. She wanted to show him how hard she worked on the field…
