Embracing Every Opportunity

I will make the most of every opportunity the Lord gives me.

Verse

Ephesians 5:15-16 NIV

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

God, thank you for the time you’ve given us.

Thank you for the reminder in your Word that we need to be thoughtful and intentional how we use our time.

Even on an ordinary day, when the evil in this world isn’t the top news headline, we need to be so cognizant that today is indeed a gift from you.

May we use it wisely.

May our time be devoted to you.

May we yield our wants and desires unto your plans as we embrace the opportunities you set before us.

In the Strong Name of Jesus, Amen.

I will make the most of every opportunity the Lord gives me.

Paul’s instruction to the Ephesians to make the most of every opportunity is as much for us today as it was on the day he wrote it. He describes the “days as evil,” urging intentionality about how they were living.

To be wise and not fools.

To not act thoughtlessly.

To understand what the Lord wants and do it.

But how do we really know what God wants of us?

Some of it is so plain . . .

Live with love.

Follow Christ’s example.

Be sacrificial and a pleasing aroma.

Be thankful unto God.

Some of it makes us uncomfortable, fearing it’s a “little judgy” . . .

Don’t allow sexual immorality to be among us.

No greed.

No obscene stories.

Nor foolish talk and coarse jokes.

No idolatry . . . no worship of the things of this world.

Some of it sounds so beautifully poetic, but also out of reach for our sin-stained lives . . .

Don’t excuse sin.

Don’t disobey God.

Don’t participate in acts of the darkness.

Live as people of the light.

Take no part in worthless deeds of evil and darkness, instead expose them.

Don’t be drunk on wine.

Be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.

And give thanks to God for everything in the name of Jesus.

We might long to say, “Yes, Lord!” yet when it comes to carrying out this command, what do our actions tell about the sincerity of our heart?

When it comes to making the most of every opportunity, are we going about the business God has given us in such a way that we are the aroma of Christ and people of the light? Or are we entrapped by sin? Tempted by the deeds of the darkness?

What stronghold do we need to crush, by the power of the Holy Spirit, as we choose to live for Christ? And by doing so, how could we become His agent of hope and change, peace and purpose in every situation that He opens a door of opportunity to?

How are you making the most of every opportunity God provides for you to be His hands and feet and heart and mouthpiece?
